Cutting my hair off *HAIR IS GONE!*

2 Attachment(s)
OK all, I have had long hair for about 4 or 5 years now. I am almost done my schooling and am about to get a real job so I want a real haircut to go along with it.

For all you fashion trendy people or people who have any sense of style whatsoever I would appreciate it if you would be able to give me an opinion on what I should do with it. Or maybe even a photoshop of me with the hair.

I honestly don't want to cut it as I really like it and it keeps me warm in the cold weather. But I figure a nice career is much nicer than a full head of hair.

**I am going to be a Petroleum Engineering Technologist... so I might have to look nice. For now I want to work in the field so it could potentially be a safety factor, but I generally wear it in a pony tail anyways.***

**New Picture, this is the official before picture**

ziadel 12-03-2007 09:06 PM

Im in the same boat you are. I havent had a haircut in 10 years.

Mines getting lopped off tomorrow.

Worse comes to worse, it will grow back ;)

blahblah454 12-03-2007 09:07 PM

dude, before and after pictures.

Martian 12-03-2007 09:12 PM

The way I see it, you have two options.

1) Keep it. So long as it's neat and well maintained (ie, washed every day) long hair on guys is generally accepted these days. There aren't many fields where it would be a significant factor in the application process.

2) Cut it down to about 1 1/2" and wear it spiked. That's the style I can picture you wearing and the tousled look is in.

Long hair on guys is accepted by understanding individuals. Most people? Not really.

I wonder if this is a geographical thing, maybe. I know many men with long hair. I have long-ish hair myself (about 8" currently). Again, so long as it's neat and clean I have never seen or heard of a negative reaction because of it.

Willravel 12-03-2007 09:29 PM

I suppose geography could play a role, but I live in a progressive area. While no one here would point and laugh (well almost no one), I find it difficult to imagine getting someone's number.

blahblah454 12-03-2007 09:37 PM

willravel, you would not believe the positive reaction I get amongst the ladies. they seem to love it on a whole. Sure some don't like it, but I find more often than not they go crazy over it.
And I do generally wash it every day. Only once has someone pointed and laughed, and it was on a night when I was drunk off my ass and a girl had just cheated on me with my supposed best friend. I ended up kicking his ass and thanking him for a good friday night (no I didn't start it, I just asked him what his problem was and he punched me in the face, he was high on something and was a chache asshole)

Come to think of it only people in there 40+'s seem to have a problem with it, and not all of them, just most.

Manic_Skafe 12-03-2007 09:59 PM

This thread needs a poll.

I say cut to at least half it's length.

blahblah454 12-03-2007 10:01 PM

If someone can tell me how to add a poll I will do it. As it stands I have no idea how.

Willravel 12-03-2007 10:40 PM

If it works for you then it's awesome. I don't really have any opinions about it (my heterosexuality bans me from opinions on other dudes hair), so there are only two questions:
1) How do you feel about it?
2) Is that how you want to feel about it?

I was just assuming you were fishing for public opinion, so I posted what's common around my parts. You're not around my parts, though. You're like 1000 miles north. Culture can change from block to block, so it makes sense it'd change across national boundaries and over 1000 miles.

Plan9 12-04-2007 03:47 AM

Keep it. You'll feel naked without it. Disregard any "Johnny Badass can't have long hair" comments as any woman with a brain will realize hair is hair.

I just spent four years shaving mine and I'm growing it out right now.

Kadath 12-04-2007 05:12 AM

My own personal bias says at minimum men shouldn't have hair past their shoulders and really shouldn't have hair below the bottom of their ears. Get a crew cut and buy a wool cap.

ngdawg 12-04-2007 05:39 AM

I'm one of those 'over 40+'s' and I have no problem with guys with long hair-most times I'm jealous of it!
Depending on what kind of impression you want to make in your career, it might be best to get a haircut. If it's three inches longer than the photo, you could lop off a 10 inch ponytail and send it to Locks of Love. That way, you won't feel so bad getting it cut and the ladies will love you even more with "Ooh!!! You're so generous and kind hearted!!" ;)

little_tippler 12-04-2007 07:06 AM

Hey there, here is a suggestion, had me a little photoshop fun:

Just a question: what is Locks of Love? I have never heard of this.

WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

and for me personally...I'd keep the hair long, but then anyone that knows what Dave looks like would expect me to say that.

snowy 12-04-2007 10:35 AM

I love long hair on guys. My boyfriend's hair is longer than mine is. His brother also has long hair. They both work in computers, and certainly no one thinks the worse of them for having long hair.

Get it trimmed up nice and keep it.

BadNick 12-04-2007 01:21 PM

I voted to "cut it short". Not because I don't like long hair, mine has been quite a bit longer than average ever since about 1964. But I figured if you're going to cut it anyway, take a bolder step and see how it is shorter, then let it grow in and maybe you'll prefer some intermediate length along the way; or if not, let it grow out again.

*Nikki* 12-04-2007 01:58 PM

My husband is an Engineer. He has long hair as do many of his coworkers.

Keep it neat and well taken care of and pulled back at work.

Bossnass 12-04-2007 01:59 PM

You're going to have a tech diploma related to the patch and you live in Calgary. You'd have to be entirely unable to function in life if your hair is going to prevent you from getting a job. I've been on plenty of 'safe' industrial plants that with very strict regulations; if working around certain machinery I've seen both men and women keep their ponytail tucked into their nomex coveralls. -If you like it, you have no employment related reasons to cut it.

genuinegirly 12-04-2007 02:10 PM

I think you'd look great with short hair. I like the argument that you might as well cut it all off and watch it at various stages of regrowth, to determine which length to keep.

Whatever you do - pay for a good hair cut. A trim by someone that can work with your facial features is always a plus.

Grid 12-04-2007 02:24 PM

Leave it long.

A nun gets into a cab and the driver keeps staring at her through the rear view mirror. "You know, Sister," the cab driver says, "I hope you aren't too offended, but I've always had this fantasy of getting a blowjob from a nun."

The nun thinks for a moment and says, "I'm not too offended. I just have two requirements. One, that you be single, and two, that you be Catholic."

"Oh yes, Sister, I am single and Catholic," the cab drive replies, so they pull into an alley and the nun proceeds to satisfy the cab driver orally. After they're done, the cab driver begins laughing.

"What's so funny?" the nun asks. "Ha ha!" the cab driver annnounces, "I fooled you sister. The truth is I'm really married and I'm Jewish!"

"That's okay," the nun replies, "My name is Grid and I'm on my way to a fancy dress party."

Mister Coaster 12-04-2007 02:53 PM

I said leave it long. Then again, I've had long hair for over 10 years now, so I'm biased. Only if there is some sort of company policy that doesn't allow long hair for safety reasons, and it pays well, would I consider cutting it.

maleficent 12-04-2007 02:59 PM

Locks of love, last time I checked, requires the hair be at least 10 inches in length - and in good condition....(they tend to reject more hair than they keep )

there's another charity too that's associated with some shampoo company that does something similar...

Giant Hamburger 12-04-2007 03:23 PM

Set it on fire!

blahblah454 12-04-2007 03:27 PM

Thanks Hamburger, once again your wisdom humbles us all!

Ustwo 12-04-2007 04:37 PM

You are a lovely woman I wouldn't dream of cutting such nice hair.

You know what they say about short hair on a pretty girl.

Edit: Oh wait....umm cut it.

Jeez, Grid. Why yellow? Were you trying to make your post stick out?

ShaniFaye 12-04-2007 06:02 PM

If it means anything...Dave is in engineering...travels all over the world (he's in China atm) and he has women stopping him on the streets to play with his hair lol

blahblah454 12-04-2007 06:29 PM

I don't think I want random people playing with it. But its nice to know that even us long hairs can get respectable positions.

Its a lot easier to get away with having long hair AFTER you get the job. Granted, its not the 1950s anymore, where guys with long hair were looked on as homosexuals and possibly communists, BUT (and its a big one) there are plenty of people who think that way still around, and one of them could be the person who decides if you get the job you want.

My advice is to cut it to a standard business cut (off the collar in back, short on sides, bangs no longer than halfway down the forehead). Once you are comfortably employed, then, if you wish, let it grow out again.

casual user 12-04-2007 08:51 PM

i grew my hair out for about a year once and cut it because i couldn't stand it anymore. i mean, i liked having long hair, but it kept curling on me and looking stupid. i had asolutely no idea how to maintain it and no willingness to do so everyday even if i did.

i say cut it. it's just so much easier

Jetée 12-04-2007 08:57 PM

Wait, this thread has only lasted a day?

stay long man.........

nothin' wrong w/ long hair

mixedmedia 12-05-2007 06:44 AM

It wouldn't matter to me one way or the other. It's your hair - do what ever you want with it.

But I've never been a big fan of the Geddy Lee look. Sorry. :shy:
