Gift for someone who just got out of the military?
My cousin just finished his stint in the coast guard. And I'm proud of him. Any creative gift ideas? Serious or joke gifts.
|
Just after my stint in the Marine Corps all my buddies got together and bought me a KaBar and had it engraved with my dates of service, rank and a sweet little quote about our time together. I was (and am) most greatful for the gesture.
A KaBar is the ubiquitous Marine Corps fighting Knife and an inexpensive but common part of Marine Corps lore. I'm sure something exists for the Coast Guard, heck even a nice plaque with similar info would certainly be appreciated...if your buddy's service was a pleasant one. Not really thinking outside the box....but hell, there's a reason for the box and sometimes what's in it, is the right answer to a dilemna ;-) -bear |

I have, in my office, a plaque that my buddies gave me when I got out of the Air Force. On it is my Security Police shield, that I wore for 8 years. They had it chrome plated and mounted for me.
At the very bottom of the plaque is the phrase;"All units. Be advised. SSgt O'Rights is 10-7 (out of service) at this time. Advise your daughters to 10-0 (use caution) and 10-19 (return to station) ASAP. Stand down, SSgt O'Rights. Your shift is secured." Or...a bottle of Crown Royal and a $1000 a night call girl might be appreciated. :D |

You should get him one of those "I went to Afghanistan/Iraq and survived!" t-shirts.
...Or, that's what I would have suggested you get him had he not been in the coast guard. |
Playing off IL's idea, give him a fish that says "I joined the Coast Guard and all I got was this stupid fish."
|
he just got out of the military?
seriously, just get him a woman |
Ya know, I got laid plenty while I was in... getting out lead to bad luck.
... Buy him a steak and tell him to pack away those damn uniforms. |
If he lived in a barracks during his tour, the best gift you could probably get him is something that he wouldn't have been able to have in his barracks room. When I got out, all I wanted was to have a bed bigger and softer than a cot or a bunk.

lol to all you sex maniacs. Like Cromp said he had no problem getting laid left and right while he was in, and now he has a girlfriend he's living with.
I like the plaque idea, I can't believe I didn't think of it. |
My wife's cousin is currently in the Coast Guard and serving in Bahrain. Just thought some of you should know tht the Coast Guard does deploy all over, and can face many situations. As far as a gift, food is good. I don't drink, but I heard some people appreciate alcohol. To each their own.

is the coast guard the military?
|
Yes. Just because they don't have stupid relish-colored uniforms or M2s... they still do a more important job these days than the US Army or Marine Corps.
|
The Coast Guard is a part of the Department of Transportation at the moment.
At any time, primarily an act of war, Congress can give an order for it to report under the Department of Defense therefore it becomes an official branch of the military. So are they military? Yes and No. Are they a vital peg in our national defense? Yes. As for a gift, my father gave me a bottle of Crown Royal Reserve which we drink only during times of family reunions (he was a Navy Pilot for 23 years). |
They're cruising around way outside the US. I'd say they're military-ish.
