anyone else think the 4 point scale is unfair?

i mean, if you make an 89 in a class, you get the same credit as somebody who slacked off and made an 80. that is really not fair.

in my high school, we have a 6 point plan and you get points toward your gpa according to your grade in a class.

for example, a 95 would be a 5.5 and an 85 would be a 4.5

honors classes give an extra 1 pt to the gpa earned so it is possible to have above a 6.0, but not that much higher since there are lots of non-honors classes students have to take.

our school system used the 4 point plan, and we had the 1 point honor classes, so I ended up with a 4.17. The next person had a 4.05, and she was quite intelligent as well... I can't really complain about the system, because I didn't get too many '89s' though. (*I was sad whenever I didn't make about a 95*) :)

I have no problem with the 4 point grade scale. Sure, you get screwed a bit if you are that one point off, but I know if I had worked a little harder, I could have that one extra point to get the grade I needed. Last semester, I missed an A in one class by a few points (out of 500 possible). I blamed myself for it, not the grading scale.

In the Netherlands we work with a simple 1 to 10 scale: a 10 is perfect, a 1 is bad. A "GPA" of 6 (or sometimes 5.5) is enough to pass.

we never used the GPA system in Canada. We used percentages. Much more accurate I guess.

I don't mind the 4 point system i just hate teachers who like to fuck over your grade. MRS. DILLS GOD WILL SMITE YOU!!!!

I guess it teaches you that almost isn't good enough.

There will always be cut-offs between grades. In most versions of the 4.0 scale, there are fractions used for + or - so someone with a 89 would get a 3.33 and a 80 would earn a 2.66.

But there is No Way to come up with a completely "fair" scale because your grades will depend on your course schedule and the teachers you get in those courses.

If you still remember your GPA in a few years, then you should examine how little you have accomplished in life. The goal of school is to learn....not to get good grades. There is so much grade inflation these days that grades are pretty much meaningless anyway.

Sure, you have to worry about your grades when you apply for the next level of school. But most admission people (at least at decent schools small enough to care about who you are) know how to compare your written words, your GPA, your transcript, and what they have learned about your school, in order to have a pretty good idea of your worth as an applicant.

I know from other threads that you have already graduated, so what prompted this thread?

and my gpa is actually pretty good (high school one) since we have a "fair" system as i mentioned. students get the gpa for the grade their earned, not for a range of grades get the same gpa.

The GPA you got in high school means jack squat when you get to college. I slept my way thought high school with a 3.95 and busted my ass in college to get above a 3.2. It's a whole other world.

The GPA scale is pretty fair as long as the teachers follow it. At my school we count the +'s in our GPA.. so a B+ is a 3.5, a C+ is a 2.5... There aren't any -'s, so a low C and mid-C are the same, but no big deal.. Low C's have to worry about flunking the final and dropping to a D :D

I am mainly irritated at my old high school. we had the 4point, but we didnt have +'s, and we also didn't get extra points for honors or AP. it was a strict 4 point scale..

it mainly irked me because we ended up with 14 valedictorians in my year. The sad thing, only 2 people up there deserved it. The other 12 didn't take a single honors or AP class, took the minimum number of credit hours, and just made straight A's.

the worst part about it, they made a new level.. AP stayed AP, Honors became Honors Plus, and then the standard class became Honors. To even it out they added another tier of regular classes. Nothing became harder, it just made it easier for the non-academically inclined to skate through school with a good GPA.

why can't I just move to the Netherlands?!? :lol:

The point system so sucked sometimes because I didn't apply myself as much as I should have and always ended up being on the lower end of the curve. Never mind all that I still passed with flying colors and got my diploma, so all was not lost.

my school didn't have the +/- equivalence for gpa scores. like a 'b' is a 3 and so is a b+ and b-.
