Need advice
For the past five months, I have been using VOIP type telephone service. I was pleased with my service and the features as well as the price (200 bucks a year for unlimited service)
My phone company, Sunrocket, went out of business. I lost the remainder of my balance that I had paid (about seven months worth of service). Now, I have signed on to another company, but on a month to month basis. I was wondering, since I went the "cheap" route on this service, if anybody could recommend a decent VOIP provider. Does anybody here have any experience with SKYPE? If so, how does that work for calls and for incoming calls? What features do they have? Any other suggestions/ideas would be appreciated. |

We were going to get the Voice over IP stuff hooked up when we cme out to Montana, but after a while, we thought better of it. I cant get past No power/no phone. That and our DSL isnt the most reliable thing out here.

I've been using VoicePulse for about two years with no problems at all. No matter where I am in Asia, my phone thinks it's in Seattle. I have my own SIP box, so I'm paying just 25.00 a month for unlimited calls to US numbers.

I use skype a fair bit actually (have family currently in china) it's free, easy to use and voice quality is usually good, can be a bit laggy at times though and it seemed to have a few issues with silence on one end of the line over a few minutes. Everytime my cousin goes to change her daughter (still in diapers) after a few minutes it plays all ambient noises at very loud volume - not quite sure why.
To place a call in skype you need to have the phone number or the user name of the person you wish to call. You put the info in and push the call button - easy as. Accepting a call is even easier, pop up window in the middle of the screen with accept / refuse / ignore (block) buttons. You will find however that every now and then you'll get some random person trying to call you, or trying to chat via the instant messenger system that comes with skype - I advise ignoring these people as there have been reports of viruses being written specifically for skype and I don't know how they're transferred yet.

Last I checked, Skype wasn't free. It used to be free for domestic calls, but now you have to pay a small fee per minute for all calls, domestic and international.

I was hesitant to use Vonage or one of those based on some of the horror stories I heard about their customer service. AT&T which recently bought out SBC where I live offers the service for the same price: $24.95/month billed to my credit card. I switched four months ago and everything work/ed perfectly! My old number moved in three days, I was able to get someone one the phone with questions and everything has been fine since then.
I do agree with analog: I wouldn't have a land line if it wasn't for my wife having a few people she calls during the day for longer periods of time. The $28/month we pay for this is less expensive than bumping up her cell phone minutes.
