I just broke my glass top computer desk. This is what I had before, and cost me about $499.



I am going to see if I can order a replacement peice for it tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath..

Everything I have been finding is either rediculously expensive, or some tinker toy looking, particle board type desk. I do a lot of work from home on my computers, so I want something decent, but dont want to go broke doing it. I also need something that is big enough to hold my dual 24" flatpanels.. They take up most of the space on my current desk.

Anyone have any recommendations or know of some good places for a simple, but nice modern-ish computer desk?

If you really want to keep that desk, you could find out what a piece of custom-cut tempered glass would cost, with the rounded corners and any drilled holes. I just had that done to a table-top I wanted to keep, this top cost under $100 so I'm wild guessing that the larger top above might cost $200 to $300. Alternately, you could replace the broken glass part with plexiglass, lexan or similar clear plastic but plastic will scratch and mar much easier than glass.

nice desk... i hope nothing was on it when it shattered. or at least I assume it shattered.

Well the back left leg is completely broken off. For now I just moved that little swivel piece back underneath the corner and shoved some books in between it and the top piece. That should suffice for now. Called the store today, and they are pretty sure I'd just have to reorder the whole thing

Here are the broken peices, in all their glory. Heres a tip for everyone... dont try and move your glasstop tables, when you have stuff on them I was only was trying to scoot it out from the wall a bit to get behind and unhook all the wires from my compter, and didnt think anything could possibly happen... boy was I wrong.

Loop File and Hutch Top
It's simple and it looks nice. Also, solid wood is harder to break than glass.

The way it broke. Tempered glass doesn't snap off- - if it breaks, the whole thing shatters into rounded pieces.

You wouldn't want to temper that desk because impacts (say, thunking a monitor down onto it) could shatter it. And because an impact on the corner could shatter the entire desk and destroy whatever was on top of it.

shakran, that (the bit about the corner impacts) is true of non-tempered glass as well. it's been my experience (from 7 years in the glass biz) that for all practical purposes, tempered glass will hold up longer and better than non-tempered.

however, you are correct in saying that tempered glass shatters completely when it breaks, which isn't a good thing if you have expensive electronics sitting on it.

Incidentally, I just shattered my glass coffee table - cost around $300 or so.

However, I went to a local custom glass place near me (check the yellowpages) and got a replacement for $40.

For what it's worth, my coffeetable, much to my surprise, was also not tempered...

I have to buy replacement windows now and then and the price difference for tempered glass is big. Worth it for the some applications. It's what, ~10x stronger depending on the quenching? The tables would cost lots more though.
