19 Year-Old Accused of Microwaving 2-Month old Baby (UPDATED)

What on Earth is wrong with some people? I am pretty unemotional toward a lot of crimes that are committed in this world (not lacking empathy, though), but this story just enraged me. What is the thought process that goes on in someone's head that he would put his own baby inside a microwave?!?
Stories like these just strengthen my anti-religious, somewhat pessimistic view of humanity. A two month old baby in a MICROWAVE!

GALVESTON, Texas -- A 19-year-old was arrested and charged after police said his 2-month-old daughter was burned when he placed her in a microwave, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Joshua Mauldin, of Arkansas, has been charged with injury to a child causing serious harm. He is in the Galveston County jail with bond set at $250,000.

At Shriners Burns Hospital on Tuesday, doctors treated internal injuries and third-degree burns the infant suffered to the left side of her face and left hand. She is listed in critical condition.

Maudlin arrived at the Quality Inn & Suites on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston last week along with the baby, his wife and mother. He called 911 on Thursday, saying that his baby had been burned in the hotel room when he tripped while carrying a pot of hot water to make coffee.

But police Sgt. Annie Almendarez said investigators later decided the child's injuries were not consistent with that story. She said investigators believe the child was in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds.

"I've been doing this for a lot of years and it actually brought tears to my eyes," Almendarez said. "I'm sitting there looking at the pictures and I'm sitting there looking at him and there's nothing I could really do about it but just keep my composure and go on."

Detectives said Mauldin later confessed to putting his daughter in the microwave and said he was frustrated by the demands of caring for her. He said he wanted to get rid of the stress of caring for her.

"When we brought him in, he was -- every day -- there was no expression, no expression at all -- no remorse," Almendarez said.

At the time the child was injured, her mother and Mauldin's mother were picking up dinner at a nearby restaurant.

According to police reports, Mauldin told investigators God ordered him to go to Galveston to look for work as a minister.

If convicted, Mauldin could receive a prison term of five to 99 years, as well as a fine of up to $10,000.

Doctors said they expect the baby to survive. However, the long-term ramifications are not known.

Some people are batshit crazy. Thankfully, they make up a miniscule (albeit very noticable) part of society.

tenniels 05-17-2007 10:55 PM

I don't get it. Okay, so you can't handle having a baby, fine. There are options. Take the baby and drop it off at the hospital, police department, firestation etc. Take the baby to a government agency. Or for god's sake, wrap the baby in a blanket, put it in it's car seat, stroller, whatever and go to a house that you see people in, leave the baby ring the bell and run. Make sure someone has the baby and leave!! There is no excuse! I'm not saying my above suggestions are appropriate, but they are certainly more humane than putting a baby in the microwave!! I am absolutely shocked at the stupidity of so many people. I really wish you had to have a license or something to have a baby and that certain people were banned from procreating, it's disgusting.

There will always be people who are mentally unbalanced... hopefully he'll get beat up every day he's in jail for the rest of his life, if someone doesn't kill him.

highthief 05-18-2007 03:17 AM

I hope he dies a slow and painful death and that the poor child recovers and gets a real parent.

Bill O'Rights 05-18-2007 04:34 AM

Before someone chimes in about this shitstain "finally being able to get the help that he so desperatly needs"...I want to take a moment to declare no punishment too cruel and/or unusual in this case. Hopefully, getting beaten up in jail every day for the rest of his life, is the part of the day that he actually has to look forward to. It'll take his mind off of his stretched and bleeding anus.

That's harsh.

And I agree 100% :grumpy:

Ourcrazymodern? 05-18-2007 05:56 AM

Maybe somebody makes a microwave big enough for an "adult" to fit into?

blahblah454 05-18-2007 06:07 AM

Wow, this makes me sick. How could anyone do this to another life? That poor baby, I hope that it grows up with no problems due to this, no scars or permanent damage.

And as far as him saying he had a message from God, I hate it when people do that because people tend to brand everyone who believes in God with the same brush. There are just as many insane atheists as there are insane Christians.

Cynthetiq 05-18-2007 06:20 AM

at least that baby is alive, this one article from last year wasn't so fortunate.

everytime you think that humans reach a new low, remember they can still get even lower.

Mother accused of microwaving baby
LINK
December 8, 2006 - 9:14AM

A mother suspected of killing her month-old daughter in 2005 by putting her in a microwave oven was indicted on a charge of aggravated murder, and the prosecutor said he would seek the death penalty.

The indictment against China Arnold, 26, does not provide details on the circumstances surrounding Paris Talley's death.

Investigators have said evidence that includes high-heat internal injuries and the absence of external burn marks on the baby were consistent with the infant being placed in a microwave oven.

"The Montgomery County coroner came to the conclusion that the injuries sustained by this baby could have only been caused by being placed into a microwave oven and having that oven turned on and cooked the baby to death," Montgomery Country Prosecutor Mathias Heck Jr said at a news conference.

Heck said Arnold would be subject to the death penalty if convicted because the victim was a child.

Heck said the baby was killed in the early morning hours of August 30, 2005, at Arnold's home. He declined to discuss motive or release other details.

Arnold took the baby to the hospital that day after finding her unconscious at home, according to defence lawyer Jon Paul Rion. He said she told hospital officials she did not know what had happened to the child.

Rion has said Arnold had nothing to do with her daughter's death and was stunned when she was told a microwave might have been involved. He said she plans to plead not guilty.

"China has the moral courage and the confidence in her God that the truth will come out in this case," Rion said.

"We will seek every single way possible to communicate to our government and to the jury in this case that China is innocent of all the charges."

Police said a microwave oven was taken as evidence.

Ken Betz, director of the Montgomery County coroner's office, said the case was difficult because there is not a lot of scientific research on the effect of microwaves on humans.

Arnold was arrested on November 27.

She was being held on $US1 million ($A1.28 million) bond in the Montgomery County Jail.

The night before the baby was taken to the hospital, Arnold and the child's father went out for a short time and left the child with a baby sitter, Rion said.

The mother did not sense anything out of the ordinary until the next morning, when the child was found unconscious, Rion said.

Why?

Break enough bones...dislocate enough joints...he'll fit.

I entered this thread to defend the 19-year old woman, who I figured was clearly suffering from postpartum psychosis. Then I saw it was the father, not the mother.

Now I'm confused. You have to have serious mental issues to do this, right?

*Nikki* 05-18-2007 12:31 PM

Sick bastard.

World's King 05-18-2007 12:39 PM

Hmm...

See, I just threw a bag of popcorn into the microwave... I don't wanna eat it now.

pig 05-18-2007 12:44 PM

yeah....i don't even understand how that thought germinates in one's mind. he must be fucking cookoo...but...jeez. you hear about something like this, and you wonder what else he's done that he hasn't been caught for...i mean, do you go straight to baby in the microwave? that's just plain old fucked up.

PDOUBLEOP 05-18-2007 12:54 PM

this disturbs me

You'd have defended a person with suspected psychosis is it was a female but not a male?

Males are perfectly capable of being crazy.

Also, are you saying it's MORE crazy that the father did it than the mother? It's mental illness either way you slice it.

Atropos4 05-18-2007 02:54 PM

How....why...what the hell

This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.

Intense1 05-18-2007 03:14 PM

This shouldn't fuel anti-religious feelings, it should fuel anti-stupid people feelings! He obviously knew what he did was wrong, or he wouldn't lie about it to law enforcement. And to claim that "God" told him something - yeesh, put the bastard in jail with God-hating Bubba.

I could understand when, 30 plus years ago, people put their just washed pets in the microwave to "dry them off", because they didn't understand what "microwaves" actually were. But in this day and age - man, that's just inexcusably sick.

Book thrown by judge, I request.

soccerchamp76 05-18-2007 03:52 PM

I just still can't fathom this story. When I first read it, I got chills and an urge to drive to Texas, find this "human", and personally drive a rusty metal object into him.
There is just no excuse for this at all. No disease or condition can explain this. Even though I am not religious, the judge will certainly say at his sentencing, "May God have mercy on your soul."

I guess we can take some relief in the fact that even prisoners have morals and guys like these do not last long at all. Jeffrey Dahmer (I'm sure everyone knows who he is) survived one murder attempt in prison but was killed by the next attempt.

jajajaja 05-20-2007 09:28 PM

maybe the baby was cold

whenever my foods cold i just stick it in the microwave for a few seconds and wa-la its warm again

on a serious note though, that is pretty fucked up
what a dumbshit, you have to be mentally retarded to do something like that to your OWN CHILD

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- A woman blames the devil, and not her husband, for severely burning their infant daughter in a microwave, a Texas television station reported.

Eva Marie Mauldin said Satan compelled her 19-year-old husband, Joshua Royce Mauldin, to microwave their daughter May 10 because the devil disapproved of Joshua's efforts to become a preacher.

"Satan saw my husband as a threat," Eva Mauldin told Houston television station KHOU-TV.

A grand jury indicted Joshua Mauldin last week on child injury charges after hearing evidence that he placed the two-month-old in a motel microwave for 10 to 20 seconds. (Watch cops react to burned baby Video)

The infant, Ana Marie, remains hospitalized. She suffered burns on the left side of her face and to her left hand, police said.

Police said Joshua Mauldin told them he put Ana Marie in the microwave because he was under stress. Eva Maudlin denied it.

"He would never do anything to hurt her. He loves her," she said.

She is hoping to be reunited with her daughter, but Child Protective Services is working to have the parental rights severed.

It is things like the comment above that give to cause to seriously reevaluate my position on forced sterilization. Some people just don't need to have kids...ever.

pig 05-21-2007 05:27 AM

crazy finds crazy. i'd also be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts she's no stranger to the backside of a hand. with these things, it usually is a chicken or the egg thing in my experience; were they individually crazy and then hooked up, or did they just bring it out in each other. normally the person you're with should say 'you know that 'god talks to me in the blowdryer bit? yeah, that's fucking crazy. get some meds...' in this case, they say 'really? did he tell you whether we should microwave the baby?'

so, yeah. fucked up shizzle there.

Well, she won't be the first (or the last, unfortunately) mentally ill person to blame the devil for her actions.

Update: Baby leaves hospital
Quote:

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- A baby girl was released from a hospital 11 days after police say she was burned in a motel microwave oven.

The infant's mother blamed the devil for what happened, saying Satan compelled her husband to put the baby in the microwave. The devil "saw my husband as a threat" because of his efforts to become a preacher, Eva Marie Mauldin, 20, told Houston television station KHOU.

"He would never do anything to hurt her," she said. "Satan was working through his weaknesses."

Mauldin said that her husband had a mental disability and that her efforts to get him help have failed.

Doctors at the Shriners Burn Hospital performed at least two skin grafts on 2-month-old Ana Marie Mauldin, who suffered burns on her face and hand May 10. She was released Monday and placed in foster care, and a custody hearing was scheduled later this week.

The baby's father, Joshua Mauldin, 19, was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of felony injury to a child and was jailed on $250,000 bond. If found guilty, he could face 99 years in prison.

Mauldin, of Warren, Arkansas, went to Galveston with his family this month to be a preacher, authorities said. When he first called 911, he said the baby had been burned when he tripped while carrying a pot of hot water in their motel room, police said.

But during a bail reduction hearing, a police detective testified that Mauldin also put the baby in a refrigerator and a hotel room safe.

Left alone in the room, he "became agitated," Galveston Police Detective Holly Johnson said. Then, he struck the baby in the groin on a hotel bed before putting her in the appliances and safe, she said.

He later told police he put his daughter in the microwave because he was under stress. Police said the infant was in the oven for 10 to 20 seconds while her mother and grandmother were away. Investigators found human tissue in the microwave that matched the burns on the left side of the girl's face and her left hand.

Baby Ana Marie did not suffer any internal injuries, said Gwen Carter, spokeswoman for Child Protective Services. She said the child is now "doing really well, making eye contact and was responsive to hospital staff when they held her."

that's extremely messed up.
call me a bleeding heart liberal and tell me that i am fucked up too if you like but i just don't get why people's reaction to stories like this is to inflict pain and violence - it isn't going to help. it's not like a kicking (or worse) is going to make the guy feel remorse, he might regret doing it because now he is suffering pain, but it isn't going to help his mental condition any. in fact i reckon it'll make it worse which is not a good thing for when he eventually gets released.
lots of the posts above have stated the obvious, that this guy is seriously mental ill, therefore he needs help or perhaps a better word for it is fixed - this guy needs fixed so that he doesn't do any more fucked up things to people and while he is getting fixed he needs to be kept away from the general public. vigilante violence is a predictable but a thoroughly missed placed response.

anyway i really hope that the child recovers fully and is given as much help as she needs to live a normal life away from her messed up parents.

Maybe not, but it would sure make me feel better. This guy is messed up in the head. He needs to be put to death. Not as a punishment but because he simply will never be well. We don't need to pay to house him for 80 years. We do NOT need to ever let him walk the streets again. And I can tell you as a matter of experience, deranged people are rarely happy. We would be putting him out of his misery as well I am sure. Put him down like a sick dog... and keep a close eye on the mother.
