What does being drunk feel like?

For you, presonally, I mean.

For me, it's like being 'X' seconds 'off' from reality. The drunker I am, the greater 'X' is. If I plan ahead, and can anticipate what will happen, I'm fine. It's a very strange feeling.

It also affects what I might say - the 'oh, shouldn't say that' filter is easier to breach when intoxicated.

I'm curious how others perceive intoxication...hence the thread.

ngdawg 04-11-2007 07:58 PM

Really depends on what's been drunken..drank? whatever....
Tequila makes me wild and I do dumb things-all inhibitions are gone.
Wine makes me sleepy if anything, but I've drank well over a bottle during the course of about 10 hours and felt fine. And white wine makes me really sleepy, moreso than red.
I prefer not to get drunk. I don't see the point of acting stupid, stumbling, slurring words, getting either weepy or aggressive then throwing up. And, while it might relieve inhibitions, it makes the sex you think is gonna be great, horrible, so any lost inhibitions are basically worthless.

Halx 04-11-2007 08:06 PM

there are 2 kinds of drunk for me.. well.. actually.. i've only been pissing drunk twice in my life.. but when I drink i usually have 2 states of buzz. 1 state is when I have tunnel vision where I just focus on what is directly in front of me. The second state is clarity, where I have absolutely no internal thoughts and whatever I "think" passes through my lips first.

I prefer the second state because I normally out think myself. If I get the first state then I'm just useless 'cause I still have my thoughts to fuck with me.

Push-Pull 04-11-2007 09:08 PM

Anymore lately, I drink enough to "take the edge off" of the day or my thoughts. On occasion, I do drink enough to get "comfortably numb" which is a nice feeling to have once in a while. Just a few Capt'n and Cokes, and I melt into the sofa. [Sigh] It's such a nice feeling.

Haven't felt the need to get falling down drunk in a long, long time. Just too much pain involved later.

hiredgun 04-11-2007 09:57 PM

I have only very rarely gotten drunk in a serious way, but a comfortable intoxication usually feels like my head is encased in a soft pillow - I'm more talkative, more at ease, and physically relaxed.

stevie667 04-12-2007 01:30 AM

Depends on what i've been drinking.

Vodka gives me a real childish view of the world, kinda fuzzy round the edges, but oh so keen to be an arse.

Tequila makes the world all warm and fuzzy, plus makes me somewhat overly amerous.

Cider makes me feel more talkative, the mental walls come down and i feel much more at ease.

Beer just makes me dopey and tired and wanting to curl up and go to sleep.

Things also depend on how drunk i am. Normally i am somewhat reserved in my actions. The drunker i get the less decision making my brain partakes in, things just get done instead of thought about then rejected for being completly idiotic.

I agree with Halx's analogy, i like the 'second state' in any mental inebriant, i spend far too long with my thoughts each day, getting away from them is...fan-fucking-tastic on so many levels.

abaya 04-12-2007 01:44 AM

Last time I was shit-faced drunk was at my husband's annual company gala in January, boy was that a hoot... :shakehead: If I am THAT drunk, which is a rare occasion these days, my memory gets very spotty and I am usually falling down or tripping when I try to walk... but everything seems just a bit silly to me, and I don't care if anyone notices how drunk I am (usually they are quite drunk, too). I kind of forget where I am, what I'm doing, and maybe even who I am, to some extent. :oogle: It's not pretty.

Anyway, like everyone else, I prefer to get mildly intoxicated over a bottle of wine with my husband or a few beers at a party... nothing serious. There was a year or two of my life when my habit was to get shit-faced drunk at any occasion with alcohol (a real charmer), but I've tried to make those events fewer and farther between. The main problem was that I just stopped drinking water and ended up taking in only alcohol... so my goal lately has been to try and drink as much water as alcohol, and it usually leaves me feeling fine the next morning.

Sultana 04-12-2007 07:18 AM

It slows me down a bit, takes the sharper edges off. I generally depend on keeping that edge, but sometimes it's a relief to let it go. Makes me a little less reactive, I think.

I don't mind losing a little of my iron-firsted control over myself--in carefully selected situations.

JustJess 04-12-2007 07:39 AM

Mostly, I'm just a bit goofier. I'm not very inhibited or quiet or shy in regular life... so with a bit of a tipsy on, I'm just a bit less of all of those... in increasing amounts indirectly proportional to the amount of alcohol taken. Usually, I feel rather happy the whole time, rather carefree. The things I'm usually worrying about are silenced, if only temporarily.

I don't mind doing so once in a while, but I'm not happy with myself if I'm more than tipsy.

Glory's Sun 04-12-2007 08:23 AM

I'll let you know when I sober up

Crack 04-12-2007 09:28 AM

I get emo. It's pathetic really, which is why I usually try to avoid it.

Lucifer 04-12-2007 09:58 AM

my nose gets numb, and I usually get the hiccups at some point in time. Which is freaking annoying, cause everyone thinks you are drunker than you are.

It's interesting that the primary description is taking the edges off. It's an apt metaphor, because I feel the same thing. It's just interesting that the majority describe it in such a way in the absence of physical edges.

It's alcohol specific for me as well:

Vodka makes me very brash and easily coerced (like jumping into pools, pissing in public, screaming obscenities). It high doses, I'm in a permanent red - anything will piss me off, and I will make my physical presence known. It's my least favorite alcohol because I truly value my sober passivity, and it goes immediately away with Vodka.

Tequila makes the world very dizzy and very uncomfortable, as if I can feel the actual speed at which the earth is rotating. Any amount makes me want to vomit.

Cider makes me bouncy and comfortable; I can't really get drunk enough on this stuff to make me unhappy.

Jaeger makes me alternate between sadness and anger, and I often hallucinate my own death, or feel that I am slowly dying. I think there's something more than alcohol in Jaeger.

Beer gives me the stereotypical drunk; no sense of direction, inane rambling, incredible stumbling (I have poor balance sober), and a dominant slur. In lower doses, it makes the world warm and inviting. Medium doses are truly unfortunate, because I forget to filter my words for the audience. I start breaking out four or five syllable words and start pondering consciousness and the meaning of life (or equally intellectual concerns).

Rum is the same as beer at low dose, but becomes like vodka at high dose.

MSD 04-12-2007 06:07 PM

I have several levels of drunkenness.

-The first is simply a biological awareness of the fact the there is alcohol in my system.
-Next comes light buzz and moderate buzz. Through those three I'm still coherent, no less coordinated than usual (not saying much) and I'm still below the legal limit for driving.
-Heavy buzz is the point at which I start to think less before talking or acting, I can no longer drive legally (I could do it coherently enough that I would in a life/death scenario, but despite my confidence I wouldn't try otherwise,) I may start to lose balance but will be able to recover, and my skill at playing Beiruit is at its peak. At this point I've lost my ability to feel cold, and pain tolerance increases dramatically. I can still pass a sobriety test if my arthritic knee doesn't give out, but a breathalyzer would reveal the truth because I wouldn't remember how to trick it.
-From buzz, we move on to drunk. I'm staring to lose balance, coordination suffers, and my stomach is going to feel a bit off the next morning. My reaction time is slowed significantly and if I turn my head or move my eyes quickly I get dizzy. I would be best off staying away from particularly sharp objects and if I'm playing lawn darts a wider space than usual should be cleared in front of me.
-The last stage is crunk. When crunk, I slur my words, cannot walk in a straight line, words go from ideas to speech without the rational part of the brain interfering, and I won't remember anything the next day that I don't focus on for a few seconds.
-Past crunk is the blackout. I only did this once, after chugging half a liter of absinth (don't ever do this.) I woke up the next morning with the only memories of the previous night being falling down the stairs outside, falling down the stairs inside, staring up at the bottom of the stairs inside, playing kings with a glass of straight absinth instead of beer, puking over the fence, and checking with my brother to make sure I had given him my keys. I only achieved this state once and don't plan to again. It was also the only time I puked from drinking other than the time I inhaled grain alcohol.

Considering that it's only 80 proof, I think you're right. The additional effect feels like huge amounts of raw nutmeg, but much less intense

streak_56 04-12-2007 07:14 PM

Right on the edge of having a buzz feels nostalgic to me. Past that point, I feel nothing.

Xell101 04-12-2007 11:11 PM

I just get really nice. I just get nicer and more relaxed and eventually immune to anger. I just get super hospitable, it's delightful to have a mild buzz because I really don't make an ass of myself and everything is just smooooth. Everything does feel to have a smooth, hard flow so I'm concerned about what I'd when too drunk to remember.

ONETIME 04-13-2007 11:15 AM

drunk? wow hard to describe. lots of ppl say dizzy. i can agree but i say it brings a more sense of stupidity. cuz i'm sure we've al done something stupid while under the influence.

and then after acting stupid it feels sick and gross (yak time)

Ourcrazymodern? 04-13-2007 02:20 PM

I've often been told nobody understood what I said. Since (whatever it was) made perfect sense to me at the time, I find this disappointing.

Atropos4 04-14-2007 03:18 PM

I have different levels...
Slightly buzzed where I can still type fairly well and fix errors if on the computer, which I usually am because I mostly drink at home.

Pretty buzzed when I get to the point I don't care if I have errors and I find everything amusing and I ramble even more than usual.

Drunk....It's probably a good thing that I only buy so much alcohol for home drinking because once I get drunk in public and get to that point where I say to myself I really shouldn't drink anymore. I do anyways and then it's too much. When happily drunk I am more social and my inhibitions are zilch. I'll pretty much do and say anything. heh

Only been piss drunk a couple times. My sisters grad party and my cousins wedding. I locked myself in a bathroom stall at my cousins wedding and for the life of me couldn't get out. Sucks that I always remember everything. haha

*opens a drink

basmoq 04-14-2007 03:57 PM

I'm generally on the "softens me up" side of being drunk. I still remember everything I do, even when I'm really really messed up. I even know when I'm saying things I shouldn't, I'm just a bit less likely to care. I know I've had enough to drink when I lightly slap my face and it feels strangely numb, at that point I simply stop, because any more and I'll regret it later.

StellaLuna 04-14-2007 04:05 PM

No matter what it is, I always feel overheated and a bit sleepy.
If it's whiskey, I get a nice warm happy feeling and feel better about everything. If it's wine (shiraz, usually) or beer, I get giggly and can't hold myself upright.
And if I'm crazy enough to need a good sake drunk, I'm fine for about 10 minutes, then it feels like someone hit me in the back of the head with a bat wrapped in pillows. Then the giggling sets in. Then I can't figure out how to work simple things like doors, curtains, or my shoes. I try to converse normally-- philosophically, even!-- but it's impossible to do because my tongue goes one way while my brain goes the other. Once I'm left alone for a few minutes, I'm fast asleep.

After one or two drinks, my social inhibitions are greatly reduced. I'm much more talkative, and I have no qualms about talking about anything or bringing up anything inapprorpriate. Just 2 nights ago I was this close to revealing a secret about my sex life to a fairly good friend of mine (but not best friends or anything like that). A few hours later when I wanted to talk about it but the alcohol had worn off ... I couldn't bring it up. Alcohol = liquid courage for me.

I've never been totally plastered though. Typically if I have more than I need, I start getting a pounding headache, so that prevents me from going too far.

In short, bring drunk (within reason) is fun. I definitely enjoy the social effects.

robot_parade 04-14-2007 07:52 PM

Wow, lots of different interesting responses. Now I wonder if my 'X' seconds 'off' response is atypical. I do get a lot of the fuzzyness, warm feelings etc. But after a point - it just feels like I have to think a few seconds ahead to do anything. After that...well, things get really fuzzy. :-)

kevpdx 04-16-2007 09:37 PM

I get really talkative, and I'm semi-quiet normally. I just have a lot more fun socially. Plus, I talk really loud. I usually let a lot more bad words slip than normal.

I prefer a different mean of getting intoxicated though, no puking with that one (my friend did though, funny story).

absorbentishe 04-17-2007 07:28 AM

I guess for me, there are different types of drunk/buzzed. With beer/malt beverages, the buzz is different than liquor. I love the feel of being drunk. It does feel like you are a second or two slower, but it also makes me very horny. I can't stop talking to women, esp. my wife. All I think about is how I'm gonna score with her tonight when we/I get home. Depending on the liquor, I may feel like fighting too. So I don't drink anything that does that to me anymore. I've learned my lesson!

I've been told that people have no idea that I'm drunk, because I don't slur my words, and I talk as if I have all my faculties.

Cavi Mike 04-17-2007 03:00 PM

Depends on what I drink and wht the circumstances are.

If I'm sober, really upset/angry/agitated/etc. and just "need a drink" and do a double 151 or just take a huge swig from my bottle, I relate it to what a junkie feels like when they shoot up. I feel it rush from my chest to my head and I just kind of detach from reality for a few. Works for me.

Any other time I just feel like I'm on top of shit, and I usually am. My mind slows down a bit and I can focus on specific things instead of shooting off in 20 directions at once. I also think I may be ADHD.

My favorite quote is by Frank Sinatra(I think someone here may also have it in their sig)
Ol' Blue Eyes: I feel sorry for people who don't drink. I mean it, cause when they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're gonna feel all day.

*edit* I'd like to add that very rarely do I ever get drunk, I don't feel any reason to drink that much. Sometimes it sneaks up on me but not very often.

ItWasMe 04-17-2007 05:17 PM

I feel that rush, too, but it rushes from my chest down to my doodah. So I usually don't drink at all unless I'm home with hubby. And I get a bit dizzy, and think more slowly. It usually doesn't last long, though, because I go to sleep. I won't say how ridiculously low my limit is.

Brewmaniac 04-22-2007 12:08 AM

Let me start by saying, my next b-day I turn the big 50, so I've been around the block a few times so to speak.

That being said, I now don't like not being in control at 2 maybe 3 beers or glasses of wine, with meals, I then stop. So given my own limits I only drink good stuff!

I realize that makes me a light weight but, at at almost 50 I can say fuck it, I can do what ever I want and I also don't tell other adults what they what they can or can't do. Except drive! I do draw the line line and can be an a real hard nose, when it comes to that!

I've seen so many drunks and I personally just don't want to go there! I'm one of those who does get a chuckle out watching those who imbibe a little to much, but not at their expense.

I also don't drink after 8 pm because I take some killer sleep meds and can not mix them with alcohol, or I'm dead! If I drink and don't take my sleeping meds, I'll fall sound to sleep for 2 or 3 hours and lay awake.

So I've said my piece, so as an adult do what makes you and your family happy, they have a say too.

Peace to you and yours!

I've noticed that when I'm drunk, it's purely physical, and my mental faculties are almost unaltered.

Alcohol works in the brain, so feelings, all of them, are affected. That's why people do ridiculous things. I really don't think they are doing things they don't mean to do. I think they are doing things they MEANT to do, but didn't have the proper motivation for it.

I'm super-shy, but when I get drunk, I talk normally, but I don't dance or sing, and those things I don't do ordinarily.

serlindsipity 04-24-2007 06:55 AM

alright, this should be amusing.

Wine - It makes me talk and accept my studder. Its not that bad, but its part why I am shy.

Vodka - It makes me act like a rockstar, which is stupid, becuase I am not meant to be a rockstar.

tequila - I will scream and kick and fight. Dont ever give me that.... PLEASE.

Gin- ew gin... same affects as vodka but wiht a constant look of disgust as if I am drinking something shitty.... becuase I probably am.

Beer- It makes me drunk and full which slows me down cuz all I want to do is not get sick from having to much material in my tummy.

Overall, I am amusing when intoxicated and halarious when I am drunk. YOu know all the silly things people do to get a good laugh? Im pretty willing to do them when I am three sheets to the wind. i am also known for skinny dipping, running around, and having the voice of a sassy six year old.

Charlatan 04-24-2007 08:13 AM

my current state of drunkenness is liberating...

Punk.of.Ages 04-29-2007 09:53 PM

I don't drink unless I plan to get smashed. What you call buzzed, I call getting there. There's a few things any alcohol does to me. I'm loud and obnoxious when I'm sober. I don't think before I speak anyways. I have very few inhibitions any time. Being drunk makes me louder, and have more to say. I also tend to have little regard for my, or anybody else's safety when I'm drunk. Now, certain alcohols have effects that others don't. Vodka makes me want to dry hump anything that comes my way. I stay away from vodka. It doesn't taste very good anyhow.Whiskey makes me very cynical. Tequila makes me very short-tempered and a night with it usually ends in someone's eye blackened. Beer makes me very playful and gives me the desire to tell alot of jokes. Rum makes me a very lovey guy. I hand out compliments like candy. I just become really nice. Jeager makes me puke. Its disgusting. I usually stick to rum and beer. Physically, usually I start out with a warm fuzzy feeling, which turns into numbness, which turns into dizziness, which turns into spinning (I enjoy spinning. Its like a roller coaster.), which turns into passing out once i can't get a drink to my mouth without spilling it on my shirt/pants/bed/floor. I'm kind of a lush, but it gets me by.
