What is up with the weather?

It has been overcast with periods of rain for more than two weeks now and the forcast call for another week of this. How is this possible? Is anyone else in North America seeing this bizzare weather pattern?

Bill O'Rights 10-25-2006 11:41 AM

I take it that's out of the ordinary for Ontario, this time of year?

We've had a chillier than normal October, so far, due to a Canadian air mass coming down from the north. My question is...where was all of this cold Canadian air last July, when we could have used it, eh? ;) Damn Canadians...

Willravel 10-25-2006 11:45 AM

It's sunny here with a slight chance of it being sunny for the next 8 weeks. It's boring. I wish we had more thunder and lightning in the SF Bay Area.

ratbastid 10-25-2006 11:48 AM

It's snowing right now in Salt Lake City.

Ustwo 10-25-2006 11:51 AM

I'm sure its Bush's fault one way or another.

Its been a cold October here, but pretty good otherwise.

absorbentishe 10-25-2006 11:53 AM

I love the fall weather, when it is actually fall weather, not winter! 30 degrees is cold, and only going to get colder. I'm really looking forward to the next 9 months of winter.

It's out of the ordinary for Ontario any time of the year! Where are all these clouds and rain coming from? It's an incredible run of bad luck...

...and I agree with you, it has been an exceptionally cold October. However, I don't think the summer was any worse than usual...

Damn you! Don't bring up Bay Area weather with me! I want less clothes, not more!

I'm sure it's Bush's fault, too. Now why don't you take your trolling back to Tilted Politics 'cause we don't need no stinkin' badgers...

Well, of course not. You guys hoarded all of that nice cool Canadian air to yourselves, just to hurl it at us when we don't want it. ;)

Snowing in Cedar City too. That makes twice this month with snow on the ground.

Edit: At noon it was snowing with nothing but dark skies as far as I could see, at 2pm, when I looked out again, it was sunny, blue skies with the occassional white fluffy cloud.

We must have been hoarding it in England, our summer was crap. 2 weeks of 85/90+ then BAM - winter!

However its pretty sunny at the moment when its NOT raining

ngdawg 10-25-2006 01:04 PM

Summer lasted about 3 weeks here. Now it's freakin colder than a penguin's tit....

yea, yea, penguin's don't have tits...so sue me...

jorgelito 10-25-2006 01:22 PM

Hmmmm....blame it on global warming?

NCB 10-25-2006 06:34 PM

I'm in Greensboro, NC and its been colder than it should be for this time of year.

I actually had to wear a jacket today. 70s is nice walkin around weather but it was a bit chilly on the bike. Beats the hell out of the 90s we've been having though.

Something is seriously wrong in the world when one person says, "Gee, it's in the 70s, I better put on a jacket," while, 1500 miles away, another person is saying, "It's warmed up to 45 today and it's sunny so I don't really need a jacket outside."

Um, did you just move to Seattle? 'cause if you did.... it's going to be another 5 months of this until spring comes... and then you will be like "holy shit, is that the sun?"

Two days ago it was 6c here, its now 17c with a blue sky. No rain.

In october. In England. I should be needed scuba gear to go to the shops, not sandals and shorts.

warrrreagl 10-26-2006 04:19 AM

Slightly cooler than usual in the Land of Cotton. Normally, we don't get our first cool blast until Halloween, but it started last week. Typical pattern, though - sunny for four days and then rain for two.

Shani Faye, I apologize because the weather has severely hampered my door-holding skills and I know all of you helpless belles are whimpering, bless your heart. I declare.

Maybe you know this already, but I was surprised to learn this.

Since my daughter moved to Olympia WA last year and I'm on the U.S.East Coast, when we talk one of the things I ask her about is the weather. I know it's the Temperature Rainforest thing. So she explained that it is not that it rains all the time as much as it's mostly misty during the rainy season except for a short stint during Summer.

I was very surprised when I saw U.S. weather data showing that New York City gets more inches of rainfall each year than Seattle! ...by quite a margin too.

warrrreagl 10-26-2006 10:32 AM

Correct me if I heard this wrong, but doesn't all that misty weather lead to some monstrous blackberries out there in Washington? That's what I've heard. Grancey and I may be going to Pullman next Fall for a visit. What can we expect from that part of the state?

BadNick 10-26-2006 11:32 AM

I sort of hate the Blackberry and I didn't know they come in various sizes
http://powervision.sprint.com/mobile...7130e_hero.jpg

Back to reality ...get me some of those berries pleeeaaasssseee! ;)

I suppose it must be true, I read it here too http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonmatusow/a...20/472179.aspx

I know Fall is rainy and misty. From what my dear daughter told me, I'd shoot to go another season if possible. OTOH, I like rain, and if I didn't have to live in it, I could even enjoy visiting a rainy place.

This is true. Downpours don't usually happen, it's just consistent light rain most days in the fall/winter. I like it.

We refer to it as "the dismals".

It rains more in Oregon than in Washington, too. But in Washington it's just always gray. Here you're more likely to get a downpour. When I moved here, I was amazed that the rain actually poured on a normal everyday rainy day. I'd never seen that before except during bad storms!

Lately, though, it's been sunny and about 65. We're enjoying it while we can, storing up sun for the winter months.

Jinn 10-26-2006 12:29 PM

Weather? You think that's weather?

Yesterday, it was about 65. All of a sudden, all the radio and TV stations started announcing a "BLIZZARD WARNING" starting at midnight. By 4:30 this morning, we had 6 inches. It's been snowing since, and it's supposed to snow until 6 pm. There are 30 to 50 mile per hour winds, and we're expecting 18 to 36 inches of snow. My buddy drove his jeep over, and said there were three foot drifts on the road (after it was plowed).

Surprise?! :D

.. and its supposed to be 60 by the weekend.

Mrs Master 10-26-2006 12:58 PM

Down here in Melbourne Aus we've had a very unseasonably dry October, its our sixth year of drought. Our farmers are the worst hit, looks like breads going up in price again :( ...oh shit and probably beer

Wikipedia

Quote:

Most Australian mainland capital cities are now facing major water crisis with most cities having less than 50% of water storages remaining. Cities like Melbourne have had rain up to 90% below the average for September and October 2006 compounding the problem of extremely low rainfall from the preceding winter months.
In 2003 we went through a damn hot day of 43.9 c thats 111.02 f just missing a record high on January 13, 1939 named Black Friday when they suffered 45.6 c 114.08 f. Heres the irony only 2 days earlier I knocked back an airconditioner.

And they're predicting another long hot summer this year.

ROFL!!!

Here in ohio we have different seasons than everyone else...

Almost Winter
Winter
STILL Winter
and.....
ROAD CONSTRUCTION!

warrrreagl 10-27-2006 04:24 AM

When Grancey and I lived in Iowa, we were treated to a weather phenomenon that still leaves us breathless - hoar frost. I looked, but this is the best picture I could find (in Oregon). It's not exactly what I had in mind, but sorta.....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../crla10120.jpg

It is neither an air frost nor a ground frost, and is extra cool when a foggy evening suddenly drops below freezing and the fog freezes and crystalizes in place with whatever it's touching that morning. It is the non-Southern version of Spanish Moss, because the trees are appear hairy and GORGEOUS. It's really something to see a whole field of trees covered in this stuff.

stevie667 10-27-2006 05:09 AM

Jinnkai: BASTARD! If i send you a cooler will you post some back? lol

The last time i saw snow like that i was so far inside the arctic circle father christmas was feeding his reindeer across the street (real story, lapland rules).

That's a beautiful picture of Crater Lake you turned up.

Hoar frost is beautiful. We'll probably be having some of it soon, given that right now the nights are clear and the mornings really cold, with lots of fog. Last year, I had to get up really early for my commute to my job at the time, and one morning the frost was so thick it stuck to the roadway. It made everything quite slippery.

It's going to be another sunny, 65 degree day here. And they're prediciting Halloween will be dry, which is good because last Halloween was the wettest on record.
