Work and bordom
Does anyone know how to stave off bordom at work? I'm a receptionist with web access and I've seriously run out of sites to visit.
I need minimal pop-ups due to the head boss walking by numerous times. |
Instead of looking for sites to peruse, tell the 'head boss' you don't have enough to do and would like to learn some new things within the business. Makes you look good-browsing the web does not.

I agree with ngdawg. There was a period of time when there was not enough work to fill my days. I finally spoke up and now I have lots to do and I am learning new things. It could not hurt to ask for more work, only help.

Maybe you should be on Monster.ca looking for a more stimulating job.

I like solitaire and minesweeper.
156 seconds on expert, baby! |
Fark, Slashdot, Digg, CNN, MSNBC - stay up to date on what's happening - good for idle workplace chit-chat.
CGSociety, ConceptArt and DeviantArt - good for pretty pictures. What're your hobbies? There's tons of hobby-related sites, but telling you the sites for my hobbies is likely to be useless. |
Interesting...notice the guys tell you what games/sites and the women tell you how to advance?

Well as a woman and a receptionist, I can definitely relate to your situation. I work in a law firm, and there simply isn't more work for me to do (I am sometimes given odd jobs from the legal secretaries - stuffing envelopes, etc - but mainly my job is to answer the phones and if they arn't ringing, I'm left to surf the web). I have found that this site itself is great for using up some time - I tend to read a lot of forums that I might not normally visit. Also, with my free time, I have been using it to my advantage to read up on things that I wouldn't normally have time to - you can learn a lot on the web! A few fun sites are www.dailyconfession.com, www.exoduster.com, and www.hurtwood.demon.co.uk/Fun/copter.swf. I also enjoy researching fantasy vacations, etc. Hope some of these ideas help :)

I was good at my job once... someone from another company was quite taken with me... they offered me one making twice the money with benefits... I took it... I still do a good job and LEARN NEW THINGS all the time and still get periodic job offers. Now, however, I can laugh and ask the potential employer... can you afford me?
Learn new things, help out, get a raise, move onward and upward. |
So far, there haven't been any other tasks that I can do. The stuff that does come up is someone else's job and they usually don't have enough to do either so they get it done. Overall, the learning new things is at a standstill until someone leaves the company (my other co-receptionist is in the same position and has been trying to schedule a meeting with the head guy about moving up, she's been here 6 months and so far, it's been a no go)
Thank you for the website suggestions and whatnot. Trust me, I'm totally gonna exhaust the move up thing, once it's available (and push for new tasks). However, till then, I am in desparate need for fun things. I do read all the news sites, slashdot, fark, bbc, cnn, msn, etc etc. Now it's just filling in the time. |
If I'm bored... I read. See if your employer would be willing to offer tuition reimbursement so you could 'further your career'. Nothing better than filling your down-time at work studying for progressing through college on the company's dime.

This may not be your sort of website, but I like ivillage.com. It's like a billion magazines rolled into a website. Woohoo.
|
I took a bunch of on-line classes while working as a receptionist long ago. This did get me promoted and a raise was included.
(woman advice once more) |
Drink lots of cups of tea. It takes time to brew them, and you'll need to pee more. It's win-win.
On Fridays* it doesn't have to be tea. (*doesn't have to be Friday.) |
Once I actually get a few paychecks under my belt, the online course thing might be awesome.
I've never heard of ivilliage before...will have to check that out. I just want to make sure that whatever websites I go to are SFW (safe for work). |
