Former Marine gets Bionic Arm

This is truly amazing and a testament to the wonders of science, technology, and modern surgery.

See for yourself, the lady in question has had the bionic arm attached to existing nerve endings and is completely controlled by her thoughts alone.

I wonder how this will be in the future...

Pretty cool.

Just FYI, unless they're dishonorably discharged never call a Marine an ex-Marine. Some will get pissed, so stick to Former Marine.

I saw that on the news last night. Pretty amazing, and I'm sure as the technology improves the motors and mechanisms will probably eventually be able to fit within the space of a regular arm.

Totally awesome. It's sad that she lost her arm, but it could give hope to a lot of injured soldiers out there.

What do you call a marine's dog? Semper Fido!

Controlled by thought? That sounds different than doing it naturally with your original arm...

Objective: Pick up a book

Bionic arm method

Step 1:*thinking*
Step 2: "Pick that book up"
Step 3: *Pick up the book*

Human method

Step 1: *Pick up the book*

Apologies! Having never been in the Marine Corps, I didn't know that

I can't wait until we can buy mechanical add ons for our body though, you know the day will come

Perhaps, but that's not my point. My point is whats the differences between being controlled by thought and doing it as naturally.

wrong

do you totally unconsciously go about your daily life? No, you think about where you're going to move your body parts before you do. You have to THINK "I want to pick up that book" before you actually pick it up. How ever short a time that thought process is... We just become so fluent with coordination that we think we're not thinking.

With advances in microtechnology, expect the delay to shrink to where it's virtually identical to the real thing.

True, I guess with something artifical as a bionic arm, you would have to take some time to really think about and concetrate on moving the arm itself and after awhile, it'll come naturally. I'd be interested in reading about users of bionic arm and their experience.

Eff yeah.

On a tangent: I'd like a bionic tail. Only because I probably couldn't have a real one...
