I suck at geography, apparently.
Man, I stumbled across this flash game where you place the states in their correct positions in the US -- http://www.games1.org/games/place_states.swf.
The first time I got something like 42%. I definitely forgot a lot since elementary school - an embarrasing amount. As I did it I kept having all these revelations -- wow, the east coast is really smashed together. Nevada touches Colorado? Whoa, Minnesota borders Canada? Hmm, I had no idea that's where Arkansas went. The worst part is that I screwed up my own state, Colorado, almost every time. It's not as "West" relative to the others as I thought, apparently. It was really quite sad. After about 6 or 7 times I started remembering my schoolin' as a youngin -- 84% with Avg Error of 21 Miles and in 287 seconds. How do you score? (Trust me, it's way harder than you think..) |
92% in 184 seconds. The first time. My average error was 15 miles.
|
I got 96%, Arevaged 19 miles, in 238 seconds.
First few were the hardest; Colorado, with no reference point. Fifth try... 98%, 1 Mile Error Avg., 158 second. I'm ready for the test... |
96%, avg 5 miles, 135 seconds.
|
82% in 222 seconds. Mostly I missed the first few, as it's much harder without any other states already on the board to reference.
|
92% | Avg error 19 miles | 146 seconds
I guess I'm not that bad after all, although I did think South Dakota was Kansas when it came up (fourth, I think) |
94% / Avg Error 17 miles / 169 seconds.
I'm a bit disappointed. Gilda |
90% 33 miles 274seconds.
I spent most of the time trying to figure out what the state was not realizing it gaave that info to you. Once I realized it I was much faster... and agreed with the reference points, when I started I dropped in approximate areas... I've been to lots of them so it's helped me alot keep them in mind... and I just also kept the song in my head.. Watching this first is cheating... 58%, 161 miles average error in 361 seconds. Thankfully I'm Canadian with a horrible score like that.
|
78%, average error 58 miles, 334 seconds.
Pretty good for a foreigner on his first try. |
Kudos to our northern nighbors. I doubt we'd do as well.
|
90% in 277 seconds. Average error of 29 miles. The first couple were hardest, and the smaller states.
|
Shit... it's the ones in the middle that get me...
78% average error 57 miles and 422 seconds. And Will... doing Canada is easy. There are only 10 provinces and 3 territories and they have telltale shapes... |

Man, I got 82%. But I am drunk. So there should be some sort of handicap. Okay, well I'm off to watch MST3k episodes on youtube.
|
90% and 27 miles. The first couple I had off only by a little bit since it's a little harder to place a few of those midwestern states exactly for the first couple turns.
|
finaly got 90 in 300sec. 1st try was 80 in 233sec. (but i am canadian and we do not learn this in school.)
|
74% in 302, but then I'm not even on the same continent.
|
68% 151 Miles 507 Secs
Wonder if you could do British counties so easilly? |
78% 58 miles 279 seconds.
My biggest screwup was montana, I thought it was down south near texas |
84%/44 miles/447 seconds
I'm really disappointed. I got the southwestern states messed up, specially New Mexico-I was off by over 300 miles! Tried again and got 94%/5 miles/419 sec |
78%, huge miles off though as i mistaken placed washington state on the east coast thinking it was the city lol. always do that. not bad for a canunck!
|
78%, but to I'd have done better if I hadn't dropped a couple of states halfway along their journeys my accident. Maybe Florida would do better on the plains anyways :p
|
86%, average error 21 miles, not bad. The Midwest got me, though. :(
|
92%, Avg error 9 miles. I know where the states are, but it's a bit difficult to precisely place South Dakota first :)
|
As a Canadian who has never been tested on the states before in his entire life:
76% avg error 71 miles (Colorado boned me), in 200 seconds. |
92%, 279sec, 29miles off. 3rd try.
|
94%, 7 miles, 356 seconds
47/50 perfect :) |
84% in 300 seconds, average 14 miles off. I was so close on the ones I missed, it should have given them to me. There was only 1 I got stumped on. I was way off on NH. I knew relatively where it should have been, but when I let go, I was a few miles off, so that skewed my average. Damit!
|
98%, 2 miles error, 503 sec. 49 out of 50 perfect. Arkansas first got me.
|
90%, 15 miles, a very slow 487 seconds. Wyoming bit me hard, and Nevada on an empty map.
|
100%, 0 Errors, Avg Error 0 Miles. 145 seconds.
|
First try - 98% 6 miles off. 400 seconds. Didn't know I was so slow : (
|
88%, 55mile error, 353 seconds. I dropped Oklahoma near Oregon when my finger slipped off the laptop mouse button. Grr... Other than that, fun!
|
84%, 43 miles, 343 secs, 42/50 turns. Not bad for a Canuck.

OK - I got 86% 28 miles ave 274 seconds. But hell, I got Delaware right off the bat, and Rhode Island and New Hampshire were in the first five. WTF? It couldn't start with Florida or Texas? |
excuse my 'aussie-ness' cos ive never studied american geography before
70%- 260 ave miles - 733secs |
72%, avg error of 248 miles
But I live on a different continent :) |
84% 135 Miles 565 Seconds.
I'm also on another continent. It really depends on how lucky you are to get them in an order in which it is possible to piece the mid-western states together from where they border each other. The states bordering canada or mexico and those next to the sea are easy find by matching up the borders. |
First try I got stuck with Arkansas first which is hard without any adjoining border or coast to assist with the placement. Still I got 95% in 290 seconds with an average error of 5 miles. On the second try I got 98% in 234 seconds with an average error of 4 miles. I wonder how well you could do if you could pick the states and start with the coasts and save the big square ones in the middle for last.
