What do you do with your Pocket Change?
 

Pocket change. I seem to be amassing a swelling pile of pocket change. When I lived in Toronto, I never had enough of it. I used it to pay for public transit. I used it to pay for my morning coffee. Inevitably it would get used.

Since I have arrived in Singapore, I have a scads of extra change lying around. While I take transit everyday, I use the EZCard so I don't need change. My office has very good coffee so I don't need to buy any...

So my question is, what do you do with your pocket change?

I always just put loose change into a tall glass pistachio jar I have. When its full there's tipically around $50-$60 in it. Really adds up after awhile!
My suggestion is to save it up. Who knows, it could help you towards a vacation in the future... :thumbsup:

It usually rolls around at the bottom of my purse until my purse gets too heavy to carry around and then I put the change into a jar or something.

i just throw it all into one of those giant containers that you see on top of water despencers, you know, the ones that have the crappy triangular cups.

after that bad boys full you got a nice chunk-o-change.

How the heck to you move one of those things when they are full of coins?

I keep all my pennies in a container that used to have brown gravy mix from Sam's in it until they get nice and heavy. I always spend my quarters, but I roll my dimes and nickels when I get enough.

I keep it in a container until it fills up. Then I either put it in a bigger container until that fills up or roll it up. If I roll it up, then it sits around for some more time until I finally spend it or deposit it in my bank account.

i throw pennies, nickels and dimes into a container. It has yet to be filled.

Quarters I can use for foosball :D

Loonies and toonies can actually be used to make purchases when I have enough of them.

I leave all my pennies in the bathroom, by the mirror, free for any of my family to take. So far, only my sister is up to it. She puts them in a jar, and she has yet to collect on it, since it's been filled for a few days now.

The other coins I spend on bus fair.

In order to have pocket change you'd have to start with bills first, and Grancey doesn't allow me to leave the house with any money.

There's a good reason for that.

You know those CDR/DVDR spindle packs, that clear lid? I use that.

It sits next to my bed, and once its full i take it to the machines and trade it in and use it for food money. Dont know how often, never really keep track.

Its usually like 50$ a pop though.

Change is my money for splurge purposes - I'm the gal you'd see at the window/counter paying out my ice cream cone in dimes.

I throw it in the bottom of my purse and when my purse starts to make my shoulder ache, I empty it into a jar. We emptied our last jar before we went to Disneyland and used it as my son's spending money...he had $60 to spend, which was plenty, and we didn't have to shell out extra for his souvenirs. I'll probably use the next jar for extra Christmas money or something. I don't have a set use for the money...usually just "extra" for a special event.

I keep mine in a jar until it gets nice and full, then I go to the coinstar at my local grocery store and cash it in.

I had never used on of those coin machines until just recently.

As I was packing, I came across all of these stockpiles of pennies and nickles...most of the larger denominations had been picked out for bus fare.

I took them to the store, tossed it into the machine and viola! One hundred dollars (give or take). Sure I could have rolled it myself... but where's the fun in that?

I just use it when I need it... I know I have 400+ dollars in change right now and I'm just saving some of it for a new tattoo.

I don't know about coinstar.... somehow in my loserish ways, I find rolling my change to be quite fulfilling. Weird eh?

I drop mine into a huge bucket, then once a year I get 200 bucks in free money, lol.

I have two containers-one's a copper pot and the other is a metal pot that says 'mint' on the front(it was supposed to be for plants, but I couldn't resist getting it for change).
The mint bucket is mine alone. The copper one is the family coin dump. I empty out my purse maybe once a week-the saved coins have paid for roadtrips.:D

I love coinstar. I know it takes a percentage, but I'd rather use my time doing something besides rolling coins...I figure the hour+ it would take to roll them is worth more than the few dollars I'd save. However, long ago hubby and I used our loose change to fund a trip to Disneyland; we took his sister and paid for her entire trip in spare change (she was 14 or so and therefore didn't have a job). Once a week or so we eagerly pulled out our wrappers and rolled what we had accumulated, and added the rolls to the ever-expanding pile. Rolling those coins was very fulfilling, so no..it's not weird :)

One funny thing about Coinstar...when I worked in NC we had one in our store, and it was inevitable that when someone stopped in to use it another customer would stare in utter fascination, standing for several minutes to watch the entire process, and then leave remarking on it. It killed me.

Commerce Banks offer a free service where you can come in with your bags of loose change, enter it into the coin counting machine. get a receipt - go to a teller and get real cash for it... before i moved out of my last apartment - I took two very very large containers of pennies to them- so large in fact, I filled up their machine....TWICE.. and not being a commerce custoemr -i walked out of the bank with 112 dollars in my pocket - no muss no fuss -just a sore back from lugging that many pennies.. :D

I save my pennies in one jar, my silver in another (American change, I'm sure there are similar denominations elsewhere). Pennies I find to be mostly useless to carry, so I save them until they add up.

If you do this fulltime, you might invest in a change sorter. I haven't, but I've always wanted to ;)

I've thought about using the pennies as projectile devices in a slingshot before. I've also heard of "people" using them to glue other people's car locks shut, but that's another story altogether.

Actually, something I really enjoy is to sit with my jar of change when it gets full and toss them into an object while I watch tv or something. when everything is gone from the jar i roll them up and put it away for christmas shopping. I started doing around age ten and I always have a good amount of money for christmas; enough to buy presents for everyone, and to buy misc. things.

I pull out the quarters and save them for the coffee machine and the kids allowance. The rest goes in a bucket. I am hoping to fill it all up and cash it in for something fun.

I use it. If I'm buying something that's $6.48 for example, then I will give exact change. If I don't have enough smaller bills I'll even give $10.48 and end up with only $4 change in return. Because I do this I don't get as much small change from transactions either so it keeps the amount down.

Otherwise, if I'm being lazy and don't give exact change as often then I will give the change to my kid.

Put me in the category of those who put it in a jar and wait until it's full. I have this big industrial size mayonaisse jar that I use, and when it's full, there is over $500 inside! I've been doing this since I was a teen, and I must have filled it about 5 or 6 times in 25 years. Now my wife steals the quarters, nickels, and dimes for the kids' school lunch money.

It all goes into a ceramic jar where it rests until I need money for food or gas. I have yet to get it beyond half full, but I reckon full it should get me $70 or more if I don't steal all the quarters to buy sandwhiches for lunch.

I rarely use cash for anything, and I absolutely loathe pocket change... so it often doesn't make it back home... it gets put in the tray in the car... but then when that fills, I have a container in my room that I dump it all in...

I leave like $5 in quarters in it at all times, just in case I randomly go downtown some night- this way I don't have to go try and GET enough quarters for parking from some place at midnight. lol

I cash it in when it gets full... maybe $30 or $40 in a few months' time.

I don't usually use cash much nowadays. I also hate pocket change and dealing with bills. I'd much rather just use my debit card. But, on those rare occasions I do have pennies, I usually store them in a glass jam jar. It's actually starting to get pretty full so I may end up doing coin star or going to the bank to exchange them for a larger denomination. I usually carry any larger change in my purse for vending machine goodies at work.

I used to work at a bank, and one day a bride to be came in with seven of those five gallon Culligan jugs filled to the brim. Well, more specifically she and her sister wheeled them in.

At any rate, she said that she was going to use the money for spending money on her honeymoon - she had been a waitress for years, and never cashed it in. She estimated that she probably had between $1500-$2000.00 worth of change - all silver.

Well, about 4.5 hours of backbreaking lifting later, she had just under $18,000.00. Not only did she get her spending money, she also got a new (used) car out of the deal.

Since that day, I've been faithfully filling up a five gallon jug of my own - it's about 3/4 full, and heavy as hell. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the money when I cash it in, hopefully something fun...

I usually save all the change and get the family a surprise gift at Christmas. Somebody else will know about all the gifts except my loose change gift. The first time I did this was the best. Bought the family a digital camera.........was a big hit. In the past few years any time I get change it goes into the bowl. I always pay with bills so the change builds up pretty fast.

I save it in a large water cooler jug. When it's full My wife and I go on a vacation. We've gone on a cruise, stayed at a bed and breakfast near Zion National Park for a few days, snorkeling trips to Catalina, Ca. The jar is filling up now and we're planning a trip to Yellowstone with it. With each vacation we can pay for the whole thing, or at least most of it, with the change we've saved.

I have a leather valet that I keep my change and keys in. When it gets to full I take the quarters out and give the change to my oldest daughter to put in her piggy bank. Put the quarters in my car, and have a weeks worth of coffee money.

I put change in the tips jar of wherever i'm using cash. If there's no tip jar, it goes into my coin purse. I take great pleasure in paying for most items with exact change. Counting out the change is just something to do while standing in line.

When I find that I have too much change to carry around (happens rarely) I do like amonkie and splurge on something fun, paying entirely in coin. Usually I save the quarters aside for laundry.

I use it for parking mostly. Otherwise, they just lowered the Soda machine to $0.25 here are work, so I use that occasionally

I keep a few coins in my car for parking/newspapers/coffees.

The rest go into a giant biscotti jar from Costco. We cash it in every few months.

Around here, though, cans are the new spare change. We have a bottle bill, so every can is worth 5 cents. Sometimes it can really add up, though sometimes it's hard because you can only turn in 144 cans per day per person--which sucks when you have a lot of recycling to do.

I have a chrome piggy bank.


There's maybe two dollars in it.

I keep my nickels, dimes, and quarters in a brown leather keybag-turned-change purse.

My pennies go in a big plastic cover that comes with that tower of blank DVD's.

I figure when it's full I'll roll them and take 'em to the bank. As for the .05, .10, and .25's I use them when I buy small stuff. Sodas, chips, candy, etc.

we have a ceramic dish on a table near the front door. It is regularly raided to go to the bakery or buy milk. Mostly (in US terms) nickels and dimes. We (Oz) did away with pennies - too f%^&ing useless to keep using.

mine goes in the car ash tray (i dont smoke)..pays for my big mac meals... $5.45 for a small big mac meal with a diet coke... that change goes a long way i tell ya.
