When I was teaching, I was on 100% of the time. I did have a lunch break, but by the time I got the kids to where they needed to be, took care of phone calls, and discussed various work things with other teachers I had about 10 minutes or so to eat. There were some days when I would be caught up on paperwork and I got to goof around during the kid's gym or art, but typically that didn't happen.
As a recruiter, I'd say I'm mostly working. I have a lot of things to get done and typically have to work over to meet quotas. When I'm at my desk, I'm looking for resumes on-line, calling people to phone screen them, formatting resumes, calling candidates to prep them for an interview, and/or calling the client to try to get the candidate an interview. When I get a person in from the phone screening, I interview them which takes about 45 minutes. I do have some times in between where I can have a smoke or go to the bathroom. I pretty much make my own schedule and have quotas to meet. And hopefully today, I will have time to eat lunch...I forgot about that meal yesterday. Later on, my job will get even crazier because I'll also be dealing business-to-business attempting to contract them so that I can work to fill their positions. Then I'll be even busier, but making a lot more money. But I will say that there are different types of busy. Teaching was a lot more hectic busy, where recruiting is a lot more deadline busy. I prefer the deadline busy because the hectic busy made me want to scream on many occasions. Deadline busy just makes me bust my ass to get work done.

My job now is incredibly laid back. There is the occasional deadline to worry about, but nothing too severe. And while there are periods of 'busy,' I spend most of my day doing very little.

I work for a 40 seat eatery from 3am to 11am, Tuesday through Saturday, as the pastry chef/baker. I am also in school from 12pm - 5:30pm Monday through Friday. Luckily, I am on vacation right now!
But I would say that at work some days I might be able to snag time to grab a bite to eat...but usually since I am the only one who can do all the things I do there, I am pretty freaking busy!

When I taught middle school it was 100% beginning to end, and roughly an hour before and after my scheduled start time. Even the four minutes between classes included a duty.
Right now, I have three classes a day, a total of 2:30 MWF and 3:20 T-Th. I have required office hours during which I'm required to be in or around my office and available to meet with students or academic advisees. Near the beginning of the semester, it's a little busy, and near the end very busy, but in the middle I tend to have days when I'm alone. Prep work, reading, and grading papers is probably another 2-3 hours a day, but that varies greatly depending on the time in the semester, and teaching a new class as I'm doing right now adds to the prep time. I'm salaried though, not hourly, and except for scheduled office hours and classes, I don't have a set time I have to be at work or leave. So long as I'm there for those things and getting the work done, how long it takes me and where I do it doesn't really matter. So I picked most of the time. I'm "on the clock" let's see--850 minutes in class, ten hours of office hours, so my offical work time is 22.5 hours a week. After the first six weeks, that will drop to 20 hours when my methods class ends, but I start student teacher supervision. Since I do a lot more actual work than the 20-22 hours that are required, but I'm not always doing directly work related tasks during that time, I voted most of the time. I'm probably doing another 20 hours each week on top of what's required. Gilda
