If you're just a bit more cautious on a Friday the 13th, wouldn't fly on 9/11 or could never live in a house numbered 666, you are not alone.

With 06/06/06 looming (June 6, 2006), authorities in some cities are worrying prophecy theorists or hate groups might read something ominous into the date and use it as an excuse to stir tension. Some expectant mothers are making birthing appointments to ensure they avoid the date, according to the Sunday Times in London.


And for others, it is a marketing opportunity. 20th Century Fox's remake of "The Omen" and Ann Coulter's book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," will both come out June 6.


The Beast


The number 666 is used to refer to the beast in the Bible's Book of Revelations:


"He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666."


Among many coincidences that occur with numbers, life itself is based partly on these three: Carbon atoms, key to life as we know it, have six protons, six neutrons, and six electrons in their most common form.


That there is concern over the date at all is a reflection of how popular it's become to search for the hidden meanings in numbers, experts say.


"People have a tendency to latch onto things, like numbers, that help them make sense of the world," said Mario Livio, an astrophysicist and author of "The Equation That Couldn't Be Solved" (Simon & Schuster, 2005).


Troubled times


The perceived importance of numbers becomes especially true during troubled times, when finding wisdom in numbers can be a comfort, says professional numerologist Sonia Ducie. "Humanity and individuals are attracted to numbers during times of great transformation," Ducie said. The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks are an overwhelming example. Conspiracy theorists in the years since the tragedy have tried hard to thread together "eerie" numerological coincidences, especially those tied to the number eleven. A few of the best known:

9 + 1 + 1 = 11
The first plane to hit the World Trade Center was American Airlines Flight 11; AA can also be "translated" as the alphabet's version of 11.
The State of New York was the eleventh state added to the union.
The names George W. Bush, New York City, Air Force One, Afghanistan and The Pentagon all contain eleven letters.

Despite its modern manifestations, searching for deeper meanings in numbers is a practice that goes back to ancient times, Livio said.


"Numerology has a long history," he told LiveScience. "You can trace it all the way from the followers of Pythagoras, whose maxim to describe the universe was ‘all is number.'" Thinkers who studied under the famous Greek mathematician combined numbers in different ways to explain everything around them, he said.


Para-science


Modern numerology has since morphed into a kind of para-science in the same vein as astrology, according to skeptics. Still, many numerologists claim to rely on Pythagoras' ancient system to divine the hidden connections between numbers—often a birth date—and an individual's life.


Our attraction to certain numbers has to do with the cycles of birth and death those numbers have seen through many millions of years in existence, said Ducie, who trained at the Connaissance School of Numerology in Hertfordshire, England.

"People are subconsciously drawn towards specific numbers because they know that they need the experiences, attributes or lessons, associated with them, that are contained within their potential," she said. "Numerology can ‘make sense' of an individual's life (health, career, relationships, situations and issues) by recognizing which number cycle they are in, and by giving them clarity."

Mathematicians are quick to dismiss numerology as having any scientific merit, however.


"I don't endorse this at all," said Livio, when asked to comment on the popularity of commercial numerology today. Seemingly coincidental connections between numbers will always appear if you look hard enough, he said.

Lucky numbers

When it comes to lucky numbers, at least, Ducie agreed."People can also ‘make' numbers lucky simply by believing they will be lucky when they have those numbers around them; these preconditioned thoughts strongly contribute towards their manifestation of luck," she said.
The obsession with particular numbers also tend to wax and wane according to the trends of popular culture, Livio noted.

Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" (Doubleday, 2003) has played a part with its showcase of the golden ratio, or divine proportion, which Livio explores in his book "The Golden Ratio" (Broadway, 2003). The very precise number is said to exist mysteriously in various places in nature and be extremely attractive to the human eye. Spin-offs in the worlds of architecture, art and even diet books are a result of the "Code" phenomenon.

Ronald Reagan's 666

The supposed number of the devil falls in and out of favor with the public, too. It is unclear just how influential the number was in the centuries after the Bible became widespread as literature, but it was certainly ingrained in popular culture after the 1976 release of the movie "The Omen", in which the neck of a demon-child is stamped with the digits 666.

When former President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy retired to their last home in California thirteen years later, they forced officials to change their address from 666 to 668 St. Cloud Road, Livio said.

No word on whether the former president whose full name is Ronald Wilson Reagan, was bothered by the number of letters in each of his first, middle and last names.

I hadn't even thought of this date having any sort of meaning. I know a lot of people put stock in date and number significance...but since the date is actually 06/06/06, why the uneasiness?

I never pay attention to Friday the 13th, considered a trip in September in which I'd have flown on the 11th, and scheduling an induced birth/caesarian so my child wouldn't be born on this date would never even cross my mind. What do you think? Is this just superstitious silliness, or do dates and numbers really play significant roles in our lives?

It depends on how you believe.

I know, I can't get wishy washier than that. But seriously, I believe in the powers of the mind and if you believe hard enough in numerology and never waver from that belief you'll make things happen. Or, you just put numbers together to get the answer you are looking for.

It's like the Book of Revelations, it will only come true if enough people wish it to (mass hysteria, pushed forth by Christian relious leaders afraid to lose power so they use fear to control their masses). If people heed the warnings and decide to set forth man's own destiny Revelations will never happen.

It's like the guy who smokes 3 packs a day, believes cigarettes aren't going to hurt him and refuses to listen to any warnings about it. This guy never has any smoking related illnesses. Is it because of his genetics or was it because he truly believed cigarettes wouldn't hurt him and he never doubted his beliefs?

Or the person who lives well into their 90's and is very healthy, yet ate anything they wanted. You ask and find their belief is they couldn't die yet because their family still needed them. (My grandmother, who is 95, is a great example of this.)

I know I rambled but the powers of the mind and beliefs are a very, very, interesting and intriguing subject to me.

I heard that it was being proclaimed an international day of Slayer. My roomate plans to walk around with a boom box bumping slayer all day.

Writing the words L’Empereur Napoleon in numbers, it appears that the sum of them is 666, and that Napoleon therefore the beast foretold in the Apocalypse. Moreover, by applying the same system to the words quarante-deux,* which was the term allowed to the beast that “spoke great things and blasphemies,” the same number 666 was obtained; from which it followed that the limit fixed for Napoleon’s power had come in the year 1812 when the French emperor was forty-two. This prophecy pleased Pierre very much and he often asked himself what would put an end to the power of the beast, that is, of Napoleon, and tried by the same system of using letters as numbers and adding them up, to find an answer to the question that engrossed him. He wrote the words L’Empereur Alexandre, La nation russe and added up their numbers, but the sums were either more or less than 666. Once when making such calculations he wrote down his own name in French, Comte Pierre Besouhoff, but the sum of the numbers did not come right. Try hard enough and you can give anything significance using such a system.

I agree with pan6467. Not only do I agree with the power of the mind (it holds a very strong mystique for me too), but I think that the truth is kinda what you make it. Truth is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm going to make a joke out of it. Why not?

Years ago when I was single, I used to go to this one diner once a week or so and order the same meal -- mac 'n cheese with veg and salad, a coke. With tax, the total came to $6.66. After two or three times I realized what was going on and started representing myself to waitresses there as the customer from hell. When they asked why, I just told them to look twice at the tab. Everbody got a big kick out of it. One waitress would pretend to refuse to serve me.

Eventually, they raised the price of mac'n cheese :-).

I read this article posted by medusa and I got the heebie jeebies. Then I started thinking. I was born on 11/24/1969.

the month of November is represented in the decimal system by the number 11, which also is the symbolic representation of the Twin Towers and was the flight number of the American Airlines flight (alpha-numerically "11") that crashed into it.

Then, I have the number 24, which is also the name of a television show dealing with terrorism and is also the number of hours in a day. It also represents the letter x, which is indicative of anything nameless or what someone who is illiterate uses as a signature.

Next, we have 1969. Anyone paying any attention can see that by inverting the two 9s in my birth year, we end up with 1666, which is the year London burned and also the supposed year that Newton observed an apple falling, thus bringing about the age of reason and the death of God.

The 1 before the 666 is a definite confirmation that 1 is the loneliest number.



Then! If you add up all the digits of my birth date, you get 1+1+2+4+1+9+6+9=33, which is half of 66, which is one digit short of 666, which explains the appearance of the 1 in my birth year.





I think its obvious that I'm the antichrist.




Damn.





Damn again.





Oh, well. The remake of The Omen is still gonna suck.

i was always number 13 in roll call for class. Mostly because of my name in the way things shaped up alphabetically, but i was #13 despite different kids with different names more than my fair share.

The bank that I go to the most is 666 Broadway (commerce bank in NYC).

There was a History Channel special on numerology, and part of it discussed how Christians, back in the days of the catacombs, had to use code when sending messages. This code changed words into numbers somehow. Anyway, using the original code numbers, they found out that satan was assigned the number 616. This was later changed to 666 somehow. (probably because people think it sounds cooler).

I recomend people see the movie pi if they're interested in THE NUMBER that explains everything.

I am not so sure that I can find the above song pro nazi- kinda seems the other way around to me- sort of ironic and edgy- has the band any known sympathies or politics?-- Edit- after a search of several web sites, it appears that the song was done for shock value and to blatantly point out the holocausts evils in a shocking and over the top way- this is the stance of the band and it is supported by many critics who point out that most neo nazi's deny the nazi atrocities happened- in short, tasteless, sure, done for shock value and to sell records, certainly/probably, but is slayer a nazi band, I for one do not think so.....note that I am not a fan of slayer, or much serious metal.....so I am far from an expert in the genre....

Well, I just took it at face value since I've heard comments indicating that in the past. I'll look into it more.

I like to think I'm above all this 666 hoo-ha, but in my secret heart of hearts, it gives me an uneasy feeling when I contemplate it too long.

It's one of the reasons I'm disgusted/intrigued with 20th Century Fox's premiering of the remake of The Omen on 6/6/06 and all the publicity stunts they've pulled to promote it.

One thing I WON'T be doing to celebrate 6/6/6 is see The Omen remake. The original still does it for me. If they put the original in the theater, I'd pay to see it even if I had to go by myself.

I dunno, I might use it as an excuse to get drunk ....

I'm a little bit scared about it - not because of the devil or anything, but just because I live just outside the city centre, with several local pubs, and fridays/saturdays usually see a few drunken idiots being stupid. 6/6/6 is just going to encourage them...

I might go out that night just to be away from home, or spend the night in the cinema myself!

6/6/06 means nothing. It's not really the devil's number because well, A) it's a date. and B) theres a zero in the middle of it, so for me it looks more like six thousand sixhundred and 6 aka. 6606.

Either way im not going to go see 'the Omen' because it will be MUCH worse than the first time around for 'the Omen'.

Hell, Mich., Heats Up for 6-6-6 Party


HELL, Mich. (AP) -- They're planning a hot time in Hell on Tuesday. The day bears the date of 6-6-06, or abbreviated as 666 - a number that carries hellish significance. And there's not a snowball's chance in Hell that the day will go unnoticed in the unincorporated hamlet 60 miles west of Detroit.

Nobody is more fired up than John Colone, the town's self-styled mayor and owner of a souvenir shop.

"I've got `666' T-shirts and mugs. I'm only ordering 666 (of the items) so once they're gone, that's it," said Colone, also known as Odum Plenty. "Everyone who comes will get a letter of authenticity saying you've celebrated June 6, 2006, in Hell."

Most of Colone's wares will sell for $6.66, including deeds to one square inch of Hell.

Live entertainment and a costume contest are planned. The Gates of Hell should be installed at a children's play area in time for the festivities.

"They're 8 feet tall and 5 foot wide and each gate looks like flames, and when they're closed, it's a devil's head," Colone told The Detroit News for a Saturday story.

Mike "Smitty" Hickey, owner of the Dam Site Inn, wasn't sure what kind of clientele would show up Tuesday.

"We're all about having fun here. I don't think we're going to get the cult crowd, the devil worshippers or anything like that," said Hickey, whose bar's signature concoction is the Bloody Devil, a variant of the Bloody Mary.

Colone, meanwhile, has been in touch with radio stations as far away as San Diego and Seattle that are raffling off trips to Hell in honor of 6-6-6.

The 666 revelry is just the latest chapter in the town's storied history of publicity stunts, said Jason LeTeff, one of its 72 year-round residents - or, as the mayor calls them, Hellions or Hell-billies. But LeTeff wasn't particularly enthused.

"Now, here I am living in Hell, taking my kids to church and trying to teach them the right things and the town where we live is having a 6-6-6 party," he said.

According to the town's semiofficial Web site, there are two leading theories about how Hell got its name.

The first holds that a pair of German travelers stepped out of a stagecoach one sunny afternoon in the 1830s, and one said to the other, "So schoene hell" - roughly translated as, "So bright and beautiful." Their comments were overheard by some locals and the name stuck.

The second holds that George Reeves was asked after Michigan gained statehood what he thought the town he helped settle should be called, and reportedly replied, "I don't care, you can name it Hell if you want to." The name became official on Oct. 13, 1841.

it doesn't really scare me just because it's really 6/6/2006. i mean, the 06 is just an abreviation and if you want to just start leaving out numbers to things then i'm certain a lot of people have the devil's credit card and probably phone number too.
i'll probably get scared in the year 2666 if i'm still alive because i am superstitious, but this just isn't doing it for me.
