He flew away (looking for sympathy and ideas)

My parakeet flew away. He was the pet who was the most attached to me. Hubby had finally started to really like him. He was so tame that he would follow me around the house and ride on my shoulder often. He would get upset if I was talking to someone and ignoring him and he'd climb down my collar to get in front of my face. He'd gently peck at my lips till I paid attention or then he'd get a little rough. He came when I called usually.

Well today the cat took off outside after the kids went out. I went to catch her and the bird flew to my shoulder just as I stepped out. When he realized he was outside he flew up in spirals over the house and disappeared. He's not come back for the past hour and I walked all around the block calling him. I have no idea where he could be of if he'll come back. We're headed out to the in-laws this weekend and it would be hard to change our plans. I have a friend and fellow bird lover who'll come check to see if he returns. I put his cage outside in hopes he'll see it and flew into it come evening at least.

I feel so upset my stomach feels like a black hole. I hope he comes back. If you have any ideas please share. Can a person call the humane society for a bird? how often do they return? How will he survive in our weather here? it's mid 60's now and 40's F tonight.

Sorry to hear about this Raeanna. Hopefully he'll be back. It's no fun to lose a pet, and you've got all my sympathy. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear about that... It's always rough losing a pet. Here's a quote from the greatest movie of all time that may help put it in perspective.

Quote:
Red: [narrating] I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about the probability of getting your baby back, but I wanted to give you all the sympathy I can. I am terribly attached to my cat-babies, and it's awful when something like this happens.

I guess it depends on how smart the bird is, and how much he loves his home. He sounds very smart and very happy, so I'd have to imagine that moves the odds in his (and your) favor.

Good luck, and big hugs!

I was playing in the neighbourhoood playground with some friends one evening when I was in grade school, and all of a sudden a mass of colour and sound flew at me and landed on my head.

We took the bird to a friend's house, because her mum was a vet. They took the bird in and postered everywhere saying that they had found it. The bird was retrieved and a reward was given, and everyone was happy.

Hopefully that'll give you a bit more hope. Good luck! Try postering for the bird. It may help.

I could possibly poster for it but we're in a small town and I have never actually seen posters anywhere for any pets except in a couple stores. The town is small enough that the only mass transportation are busses that go from door to door not bus stop to bus stop (there are no bus stops) and they quit running after 5:30 pm. You may see one person walking every few blocks that you drive. The pedestrian traffic is minimal. I could possibly poster at the grocery stores and truck stops though. But after tonight I will probably consider him gone. From what I read - parakeets don't do well in temperatures much below 55. Tonight it's supposed to get down to 40 and rain tomarrow morning. I have walked the entire neighborhood and cannot stop imagining terrible things. We live near the Wisconsin river and as I watch the sky I alway see at least one hawk or eagle circling above waiting for an unseasoned prey to show themselves. He would be a tasty mouthful for them.

All I can hope for is that he comes back to roost at home before evening falls.

Runaway pet... it's sad in a sense, but then again you want him to be happy also, right? Maybe his biggest wish is getting away and flying free, and passing by your garden once in a while to see if you're doing okay, remembering the also happy times with you.

And if you have had him since he was a little bird, would it be somewhat natural for him to kind of fly independent from his parents? Like... he kind of reached the time for going alone and start a new life as an adult bird, just like kids going away from home to go to universities, to chase their dreams, etc.

While on one hand I hope it will return eventually (my biology had a crow or something which would actually come back after flying free), on the other hand maybe you can look at the other side of the coin- he must be flying wherever he is, making new friends and having an exciting new life now!

Cheer up!

p.s. Maybe you have tried it but putting his favourite sorta seeds or food might increase the chance of his return! Trust me, runaway teenagers do miss home food sometimes.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Well the tempurature got below freezing Friday night. He did not come home. Unless he found another person and they took him in he most likely died that night. Parakeets cannot even handle a cold draft without getting sick. Staying out in below freezing weather all night would be the death of them. The northern climate is way too cold for him to survive. I've tried to pretend that he headed straight south and is now in Fla where there are a few small colonies of Parakeets. He found another of his kind and they're working on a nest and babies right now. I wish.

The spot where his cage used to hang in the dining room seems so empty. I didn't realize that every time I walked into the house I'd whistle for him. I have to restrain myself and it's disappointing every time I enter the diningroom to know he won't be flying to my shoulder. He roamed the house freely and followed me constantly. He'd whistle and when I'd answer I could count on hearing his wings flying around looking for me in seconds. He was getting bolder and would even fly upstairs or to the basement to follow me. I feel lonesome without that light weight on my shoulder all the time.

He's not come back and it's been 4 days now.

But hubby went and did something so terribly sweet that has helped me not feel as lonesome.

He went and brought home two BABY parakeets today. One is blue and white and the other is green and yellow. They feel so small compared to Buddy. Still gotta name them. I'm so tickled. I got the blue one to stay on my shoulder for quite a while. Both will sit on my finger for a short while. It's fun to train them so I'm excited about that too. I cryed when hubby showed them to me. How sweet! (He went and got a bigger cage for them too.)

I keep checking back for good news, and while this isn't what I was looking for, two babies seems like a wonderful surprise! You have a lovely husband there, Reanna.

You'll have to tell us what you end up naming them!
