Scientologist Isaac "chef" Hayes quits ‘South Park

the argument of southpark and mocking religion and culture isn't new... but it's starting to bite them in the ass! chef quit! according to a poll on this website, 90% sided with the makers of the show, and 10% sided with chef

Updated: 4:49 p.m. ET March 13, 2006
NEW YORK - Isaac Hayes has quit “South Park,” where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies’ man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

“There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins,” the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

“South Park” co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, “This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he’s cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians.”

Last November, “South Park” targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called “Trapped in the Closet.” In the episode, Stan, one of the show’s four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won’t come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker “never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.”

Sounds like Chef can dish it but he can't take it. It's BS. If he is persoanlly offende, he mi9ght consider the actual weight of the show versus the weight of Tom Cruise's recent actions. If I were a scientologist, I would care more about a run away star with the attention of America than a cartoon that's know to push all boundries.

ratbastid 03-13-2006 04:10 PM

I sort of regret the tone that Matt Stone takes at the end of the article. I mean... he's right. It's just a shame to have to end a years-long professional relationship like that. There was a high road to be taken... and he drove right on by it.

cyrnel 03-13-2006 04:29 PM

Too bad. I expect even if he was okay with things, other scientoologists (sp?) weren't. No doubt he risked losing free towel service at the club.

Ustwo 03-13-2006 05:20 PM

I love the Chef Character on South Park, and I hope they find a good replacement voice rather than get rid of the character.

I could care less about some scientologist who can't handle a good dose of the truth.

Willravel 03-13-2006 05:23 PM

I also don't think the episode of SP about Scientology was bigoted towards anything but Tom Cruise and John Travolta. I fact checked the episode of SP, and nothing about Scientology seems off base at all. I agree with USTWO, Isaac Hayes can't handle truth.

trickyy 03-13-2006 05:26 PM

there was an episode about catholics this year that was pretty offensive too
i'd even say it was more offensive than the scientology episode, but i guess that's up for debate.

i hardly watch the show, but have fond memories of the time mormonism was explained. the background music was someone singing "dum du-dum duh dum dum..."

Whats funny is I learned nothing new about scientology in that episode, but I did learn something new about Travolta. I got some inside holywood information that he is indeed in the closet, specificly with his co-pilot. Explained that part of the joke to me after the fact (Cruise and R. Kelly didn't need explanation).

Carno 03-13-2006 07:05 PM

Haha. Good riddance to him. If he can't take a joke, fuck him.

You got some "inside hollywood information" from a satire cartoon show? Please tell me you aren't serious about that sentence.

Halx 03-13-2006 07:48 PM

ratbastid, I have to disagree with you. I am absolutely grateful for the remarks and calling Isaac on his bullshit. The only high road that exists today is to not even get involved in anything. When the only thing you're used to hearing is "We respect his decisions and wish him luck in his future endeavors" those words from Matt Stone make me wanna marry his left nut.

No the information had nothing to do with the show. Friend of my best friend happens to be a very wealthy hollywood type. After speaking with him at a party after I saw the south park scientology episode, Travoltas co-pilot came up (unrelated to the show). That story made the whole 'Travolta in the closet' bit make sense.

CSflim 03-14-2006 10:43 AM

Hahahahah. This story is the funniest thing I've heard all week. Fuck Isaac Hayes. What a disgusting hypocrite.

Poppinjay 03-14-2006 10:57 AM

Damn. No more sweet love down by the fire.

I have to say this, Hayes was introduced singing a love song about inter-species fucking, and now he has a problem with the tone of the show.

It was probably a strong arm from the church.

CSflim 03-14-2006 11:21 AM

Here's a link to the episode in question.

http://www.scientomogy.info/south-park.htm

I can't quite tell if it is legal or not. It is linked to from wikipedia.org and the following is a quote from southparkstudios.com:
Quote:

Q. - I was surprised that in the last FAQ you recommended downloading episodes on KaZaa and other file sharers. What are Matt and Trey's official stances on South Park episode piracy?

A. - Matt and Trey do not mind when fans download their episodes off the Internet; they feel that it’s good when people watch the show no matter how they do it.
I'll leave it up to the mods to decide to remove this link or not.

analog 03-14-2006 11:24 AM

Well... whether it was direct influence or his own decision, it was still the church that made him do it, in the end.

And yeah, they've been making fun of everyone for years and years- and then they poke a little fun at scientologists and suddenly they've crossed a line? Hahahaha yeah ok, whatever.

I'm glad they reacted the way they did, and i wouldn't expect less from Matt and Trey. That's a bullshit move on Hayes' part. You can't claim moral superiority suddenly after participating in it gleefully for years.

Bill O'Rights 03-14-2006 11:41 AM

Hold up, people. A little perspective please? Y'all are missin' the bigger issue here...

so, this brings up the question, how do you think they'll off Chef? You know it's going to be brutal and politically and morally wrong, and in being so, it will be so right. Thoughts?

Ace_O_Spades 03-14-2006 12:02 PM

maybe another scientology episode is in order

let chef be brainwashed and get taken up in the mothership to meet Xenu or some such bullshit.

Yes, it definitely seems Hayes simply didn't like it when it was his own clique under the microscope. If Stone and Parker crossed the line (whatever the hell that means), it would have been long before the episode in question.

This says everything right here:

Fuck him...

I think Snoop Dogg would be a great replacement for a new chef voice... :)

oh... Sooo many thoughts, so little time...

Have a new Scientology episode, and randomly throughout the whole show cut to the chef working the glory hole in the confessional...

or

Keep the chef character in the show as a ball-gagged S&M slave for Hitler and the Devil...

ziadel 03-14-2006 02:48 PM

I really did'nt know he was a scientologist.

but now that I do, he won't be missed.

Toaster126 03-14-2006 02:53 PM

Add him to the huge list of people who can dish it out but can't take it.

i wouldn't be suprised if they simply find another voice, if they kill him they have to use another voice for that episode anyway so they might as well keep him

flstf 03-14-2006 08:32 PM

Chef will probably wind up in the closet with Cruise before this is all over with.

Did you actually watch the show? It was VERY explicit about stating that Scientology is a global scam. I don't think that's a tenet of the Scientologist faith. Even if this was just a joke, the show was definitely MORE critical of Scientology than Cruise, Travolta, or Kelley.

Actually, after watching the episode, I can see why Isaac Hayes was offended. I can't say that he's unbiased. It's obvious that he left because it was attacking something he believed. But it is VERY obvious why he was offended: the show presented Scientology as completely untrue. I don't know if it's done that with any of the other religions. They've made fun of other religions, but I dunno whether they've explicitly called them untrue.

hulk 03-15-2006 06:55 AM

Perhaps because other religions aren't based upon science fiction novels? Read up on the history of the 'religion' and you'll find why it's so easy to redicule.

JustJess 03-15-2006 07:37 AM

*grumble*
/tries not to mock others' religions...

/laughs because people actually worship CLAMS....

First off Scientology is a global scam and you would need to be an idiot to fall for it.

Secondly if you saw the Mormon episode, they basically called Joseph Smith a liar and a fraud.

"dum dum dum dum dum"

They had the collage of Cardinals all child molesters, the local priest fucking a woman in the confessional, and the virgin Mary shooting blood out her ass on the popes face (in all seperate episodes).

I think Scientology can suck it on this one and Mr. Hayes can hook himself to an E-meter.

dksuddeth 03-15-2006 08:46 AM

Isaac Hayes lost ALL respect from me on this one. total hypocrisy. But, as always, I'm sure that he could give a rats ass whether I respect him or not.

pig 03-15-2006 09:12 AM

the thing i thought when i read this thread was that i'm surprised shaft wasn't upset about the episode with david blaine and the blainetology stuff. i thought that was a pretty action packed jab at the kool aid comet riders, scientology, david blaine, and jesus christ, all rolled into one.

i really can't see how you can rationally get too upset at the south park guys for making fun of scientology, after all the stuff they've done with that show. i think shaft is probably just tired of the show in general, and this just punched the clock for him.

"a prostitute is like any other woman, but you don't pay her to stay, you pay her to leave...take it James Taylor..."

Carno 03-15-2006 09:39 AM

This thread reminds me of how much I love South Park.

end transmission

Yeah, my lawyer has an attorney friend in Hollywood who had things to say about Cruise.

But I think that's another of Hollywood's worst-kept secrets, even though Cruise sues anyone who says it too publicly.

Scientology IS a global scam. The creator, L. Ron Hubbard, said so himself. Jesus Christ never called Christianity a scam. Muhammed never called Islam a scam. Looking at the whole picture, Scientology is obviously a scam.

Scientology is untrue. I fact checked the episode of SP, and nothing about Scientology seems off base at all. On some level, one could suggest that all organized religion is a global scam, but Scientology is so blatent in it's scamming people that it's impossible to ignore. My theton level is 0.

I can't believe that people actually read and or believe this bull shit that is posted on fark.com. This is the first time I have been to fark.com and definatly the last. Considering I am witness to a lot of shit that goes on in hollywood, its hard to post some complete bull shit rumor say about tom cruise and katie holmes breaking up when they are sitting in front of you acting completely normal and sane. You guys must have small penis's since you have to make up shit for people to notice you. Hate to be with you in bed. Dumb shits! You may think I am, at least Im getting rich off being honest and not lieing to everyone in the fucking world.

Mormons?

To paraphrase:

"I lost some pages, can you re-read them for me?"

"No. For some flimsy excuse, I can't re-read the tablets. And it isn't because I was making that shit up as we went along."

Well then again, Mormonism was also shown to be the only correct religion. Everyone else went to hell.

If John Travolta or Tom Cruise quit Scientology today, the church would publish stories about them being gay tomorrow. I wonder what shit they have on Isaac Hayes?
