*Ding* Pat yourself on the Back

This is the "I Donated to keep this place alive" Thread, While it isnt mandatory to contribute financially to this community, I think we all know the realities of Cost for the amount of Bandwidth involved in such a place, and I for one appreciate what this place gives me daily.....even when I am not here.

So....I sincerely appreciate anything that helps TFP remain a viable community, including the help of those listed below. Give yourselves a pat on the back, you deserve it.

Money sent. Booya.

snowy 03-13-2006 02:35 PM

Um...seeing as I'm barely making ends meet at the moment, it's going to be a while before I can send in any kind of donation--probably at least a month. But you can bet that I will send it when I have it.

The_Jazz 03-13-2006 03:01 PM

The Paypal transaction is complete. Hopefully the lights stay on for a little while longer.

ratbastid 03-13-2006 04:15 PM

$30 just sent. Kind of feels like a drop in the bucket. But I guess the trick is to have enough drops!

Sage 03-13-2006 04:32 PM

Martel and I sent in our very small drop- $13

So... that's $113 so far!

eribrav 03-13-2006 04:40 PM

I've contributed before. I'd feel more appreciated if I was tagged with donor, and more likely to contribute again.

Meditrina 03-13-2006 05:27 PM

I sent $10. Hopefully in the future, I will be able to send more.

amonkie 03-13-2006 06:25 PM

Changed the budget .. I must forgoe chocolate for a while.. but for TFP ...

*me sends out warning trucks before her*

Fremen 03-13-2006 06:28 PM

I was able to send in $15.
I believe now that my Paypal account is back in working order, I'll be able to pony up more often.

Could we have a more frequent reminder? I always feel guilty when these announcements show up, and I realize I haven't donated in a while.

For the longest time, TFP Moderators were adamant that they would not put up any threads or forums that might be construed as a popularity contest. The idea of publically praising members of this site would lead to cliques and hierarchies. The point, the purpose of TFP is the discussions, the quality posts... But this thread is the antithesis of everything I just wrote... This thread is a popularity contest. This thread is about people, not quality posts... This thread says "look at me! I deserve attention because of something I did." Like it or not, it divides TFP members into the two categories; those that do and those that don't. It's like saying this is the cool group and this is the loser group. Cool people donate. Losers don't.

So what? you ask. I just don't think it's fair. I know that this Forum needs donators to keep it going. I accept that and I understand that. I know that this thread is a way of publically bringing the donation issue, which is a major issue, to the forefront. I just don't like the way it's done. I think you could have continued posting Halx's public service announcements and having the moderators gently reminding the members to donate. If you say that just wasn't working and this was the logical next step, then fine, I guess. I just think it's a poor way of doing it.

I know I risk the wrath of the mods here. I'm bracing for it. But I just want you to know that I think that everyones opinions should be welcomed and considered, even if you don't like them. And I also ask you to be fair and considerate to those who voice their opinions.

tecoyah 04-01-2006 05:19 PM

This thread is a thank you to our membership....nothing more. If it for some reason offends you, I apologise for that. This does not change the fact these people deserve my thanks.....Deal with it.

I don't see it as a popularity contest at all. I see it as a chance for us to say "thank you" to the people that do donate. This site is here because of the donors. There's nothing in this thread, or anywhere for that matter, that says that being a donor gives you a special board or any special treatment. People already have donor tags, does that make them a clique? I don't think so. Sometimes, people like to know that they are appreciated for helping out, and we really do appreciate it when the members lend a hand. We've said this more times then I can remember in all of the years that I've been here, "you can donate with money, or with content, either way, it helps the site and we appreciate it more then you will ever know." There are many ways to donate here, just think about how many threads there are that make you think, "wow, that's why I keep coming back here." A lot of those are made by non-donors. We love content like that and appreciate that greatly too.

Tec just wanted to take an opportunity to thank all of the people who want to keep the site alive, and let them know how much we appreciate them. I'll be the first to stand up and applaud him for it. If that makes me a hypocrit and an asshole, then so be it, I'll wear those titles with pride.

Wrath of the mods? I don't remember us ever being draconian on here unless it was a situation that absolutely warranted it, and even then, it was always discussed, agreed upon, and usually restrained in how it was handled. And, we've always welcomed all opinions. I'm starting to wonder what board you're checking at this point :hmm: If this were any other place on the net, you'd be banned, posts deleted, and no one would speak of you again. Not only is your post, along with you, still here, but we're actually discussing it and totally going off topic on what tec tried to do. I'm not trying to turn this post into a "consider yourself lucky to be here" post, because that's not my intent, but what I am saying is that if we didn't value the opinions of our members, that post wouldn't be here. This is proof of that and I just can't understand where you're getting it from that we don't value those opinions. *shrug*

msh58 04-02-2006 09:14 PM

i've donated to a board before, was never thanked in a thread like this, nice touch.

but even my drunk ass fraternity years ago wouldn't have solicited donations from people who don't get to enjoy full membership.

I see posts that flaunt a different world here thats unseen. Like only the most "enlightened" of our species can partake of the desserts that lie within.

sounds like an exclusive club here with desperate money problems. I'm sorry to hear that though, i really enjoy the main board, probably wouldn't look further than that even if i was a full member. Hope one of you hits the lottery.

BadNick 04-03-2006 05:28 AM

Even though I don't spend a large amount of time here, this place is SO interesting I can't imagine it not being well supported ...so I sent my little something via snail mail, maybe it was two weeks ago.
