Why Is google censoring this video?

When trying to play a video at http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...31645001034711 I get the message "This video is not playable in your country."

You can watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oemDhSX6dmA

The caption says:

Quote:

Detonation of Improvised Explosive Device used against Coalition forces. We found this one before they could use it against us

I could see google censoring some that was graphic or offensive... but this is about the same as we see/hear about on the news everyday. I dont see any reason for this to be censored.

guess its googles servers and they can do what they want...

Willravel 02-21-2006 09:52 AM

US citizens are supposed to be consored from the realities of the Iraq war.

That's the best reason I've got, but it's not much.

RAGEAngel9 02-21-2006 10:43 AM

I keep hearing that the person who put it selected it to not be playable in the US.
As I am currently at work, I cannot confirm or deny if this is possible.
It does make the story more interesting.

Lucifer 02-21-2006 10:55 AM

I had no problem playing it in Canada, I even used your google link. It seems rather innocent to be censored, just an explosion on a road, you can't see anything interesting. I see more impressive explosions every night on TV!

Ustwo 02-21-2006 11:05 AM

Wierd since it will show all the stills. Odds are someone a google fucked up somewhere or there is a policy about active combat footage being screened prior and this is part of it.

Since google will show this pos http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...9811759&q=iraq

or even this one
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...5151330&q=iraq

I really doubt it has anything to do with censorship, perhaps they accidentally set it to a China code :P

ratbastid 02-21-2006 12:42 PM

It's not that. When you upload a video to Google, you can select certain countries it can't be seen in. The uploader is preventing US viewers from seeing it, not Google.

Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.

Very wierd policy.

astrahl 02-21-2006 01:15 PM

Google censored it because it portrays the future of America.

Bit weird that they would still show the stills though......

I wonder what purpose it serves for google to even give that option?

Most likely it would be to give content creators more control on how/where their videos are viewed. Google seems quite receptive to its users needs, and this feature might have been requested by those who want to retain some control over theirs posts. It also might have to do with US copyright laws, especially for individuals uploading outside of the United States.

Aladdin Sane 02-23-2006 08:13 AM

Wait. Oh, well, for a moment there I thought I was in the Paranoid Conspiracy thread, and I was just gonna say I bet it was ordered by Chimpbushnazi, the Dumbest Evil Genius in the History of Fascism.

n0nsensical 02-23-2006 05:42 PM

So the answer to the question is, Google is censoring it because the uploader told them to censor it.

It helps to prevent lawsuits from uptight countries that won't allow their citizens to view footage of atrocities committed by certain epople in those countries in years past, or as I like to call it, the "I'm covering my eyes so you can't see me" mentality.

What ever happened to learning from our mistakes?

ninja edit: perhaps it's to inspire those who don't know about the feature to panic and come up with conspiracy theories that Google's search bots will not only archive, but email directly to the boardroom computers so they can laugh at what The Internet thinks they're doing behind closed doors.

n0nsensical 02-24-2006 10:03 PM

It's like, I totally understand from a rational point of view why Google does these things like censoring videos, censoring China searches, DRM on videos, but I know they know what's right and it seems like they could be doing much more to push for it. Instead it's more like they're taking the easiest way possible while just barely managing to stay on the "not evil" side of the line. Yeah they're a for-profit venture and they have an obligation to the shareholders and all, but they seem or seemed to be on "our" side more than most.. and I definitely give them major credit for refusing to capitulate to the government's ridiculous search subpoena.

Trisk 02-24-2006 11:45 PM

To n0nsensical:
They were protecting their company in both situations.
In the first one, they protectied their company by making it harder to start lawsuits against them.
In the second one, thney protected their company by ensuring that the "secret code" google uses for it's search engines isn't sent out to the government and leaked or something. Also, they are protect their money because it makes users trust them and use their services even more, while if they gave in to the government's prying, their profits would go down because of peoples' paranoia.

Still, this doesn't mean google is an "evil company". Just because they are trying not to go bankrupt from lawsuits doesn't mean that they don't "side" with users.

AquaFox 02-25-2006 01:44 PM

.... why doesn't someone just reupload it and select it as viewable by all?

the world wide web is WORLD WIDE, if the middle east or any country feels that they shouldn't be open with everyone, they can make there own networks...

SERPENT7 02-25-2006 08:28 PM

A-Fox,

Update: Feb. 21, 2006 - Xeni Jardin of Boingboing.net has posted a piece about debunking this rumor.

If you think Google is only censoring web contents in People’s Republic of China, you are mistaken, my friend.

Here is an experiment you can try:

In Google Video, search for “night explosion”. Or you can go directly to Google Video #4258374615945369026.

If you are in United States, your will see this message displayed on your monitor:

“This video is not playable in your country.”

You will get the same result when you look for Google Video #2053731645001034711.

If you are curious about these two videos, I have uploaded them to Revver and YouTube, so have a look for yourself.

Google Video #4258374615945369026 (aka. Night Explosion) via Revver and YouTube.

Google Video #2053731645001034711 (aka. Big Boom) via Revver and YouTube.

From anonymous comments posted here, apparently users who upload videos to Google Video have the choice of blocking countries from viewing them. So why are these two videos censored from Americans?

Note: Some of you may ask if web users in United States could not access these two videos, how did I manage to get them?

The answer is: Google Video Downloader.

What I did was copying the video's link into Google Video Downloader's page which generated links to the actual .flv files.

From there, I was able to save the .flv files, use CinemaForge 2.0 to convert them into Quicktime movies, I then was able to upload them to Revver and YouTube.

FancyPants 02-27-2006 07:50 PM

Could someone confirm that google allows the uploader to censor content? A screenshot perhaps? I'd be interested just in case theres anything we actually get censored from.
