Happy Groundhog Day!!
Well, Phil supposedly saw his shadow, which means, were in for 6 more weeks of winter... Considering how lame winter has been so far... Not so very cold.. Ok more snow than I like, but it melts before it turns all brown and crusty...
Celebrate today! Remind your loved ones how special they are! throw a snowball... Dance naked under the light of the moon... Happy ground hog day!! |

Yesterday, I told my boss that, as a former Pennsylvanian, I should get tomorrow off with pay. He looks at me stupidly (as if he ever looks at me any other way), and I remind him that it's Groundhog Day. He say's "So, take a vacation day". The man has no sense of humor. |
unclephil saw his shadow? Is he even out of bed yet?
/me waits for Wiarton Willie , Shubenacadie Sam and Balzac Billie to speak up (stand up for Canada you cheeky rodents). |

Has there ever been a time when he didn't see his shadow?
|
Of course not. That's the whole point.

What's so special about Feb. 2? Celestially speaking, Groundhog Day on Feb. 2 is a "cross-quarter" day, about halfway between the winter solstice in December and the ver nal equinox in March, and is celebrated in some cultures as the mid point of winter. It's not far from the time many groundhogs end their hi bernation anyway, around the second week of February. What's the wake-up call? The groundhog's internal clock is believed to be affected by annual changes in the amount of daylight. Hormonal responses to cyclic changes in production of melatonin, a sleep-related hormone, are thought by some to be the signal to wake up. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? About 700 pounds. Compared to beavers, groundhogs/woodchucks are not adept at moving timber, although some will chew wood. (At Cornell, woodchucks that gnaw their wooden nest boxes are given scraps of 2-by-4 lumber.) A wildlife biologist once measured the inside volume of a typical woodchuck burrow and estimated that -- if wood filled the hole instead of dirt -- the industrious animal would have chucked about 700 pounds' worth. From what else I can find- Phil is right 40 percent of the time... which for a groundhog, I guess that sucks... |

so are you the elusive pothole pete? |
I never understood this day. If he sees his shadow we have 6 weeks of winter and if he does not we have what? 6 weeks until spring? March 20 is the first day of spring, which happens to be just about 6 weeks from today anyway.

ours down here (General Lee) didnt see his this morning, so ya'll can have more winter, WE are going to have an early spring

happy groundhog day!! :)
someone sent me this quote and i love it ;) hehehehehe "This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address occur on nearly the same day. As Air America Radio pointed out, "It is an ironic juxtaposition of events: one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication while the other involves a groundhog." cheers ;) sweetpea |
