English Russia Darvaz: The Door to Hell from this article the Russian hell door
"This place in Uzbekistan is called by locals “The Door to Hell”. It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The story of this place lasts already for 35 years. Once the geologists were drilling for gas. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground. None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it’s burning, already for 35 years without any pause. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there" http://englishrussia.com/images/darvaz_door/2.jpg http://englishrussia.com/images/darvaz_door/5.jpg |
Jesus, that looks like something from a nightmare.

Thirty five years? Is that even for real?

Not sure about that particular natural gas dep, Xersys, but I know that there have been some underground coal mines that have been burning for over 20....

I'm surprised a bunch of Texans aren't standing over that trying to grill some ribs or steaks!

Doesn't matter. Talk to old Dick Cheney, he probably owns that hole, too. I worked at Halibuton making oil drilling loc. maps for that fuck.

Going to grill up some steaks tonight though. In the rain! When the wife wants steaks, the wife wants steaks regardless of some freakin rain. |
I was in Uzbekistan. There are a lot of oil and gas reserves there and the wells are always light, burning away into the night. Its not surprising some doofus would throw his cigarette down there :)

That would be so awesome to see in person. I'd think there'd be some way to harness the heat? Considering every singe one of our current technologies depend on heat to make power, you'd think that a big-ass open hole spewing heat into the atmosphere would be something that someone would be interested in exploiting...

Wait, where does DK live?
