Random Stupidity in the Name of Terrorism
July 3, 2008

from Schneier, http://www.schneier.com

An air traveller in Canada is first told by an airline employee that it is "illegal" to say certain words, and then that if he raised a fuss he would be falsely accused:
When we boarded a little later, I asked for the ninny's name. He refused and hissed, "If you make a scene, I'll call the pilot and you won't be flying tonight."

More on the British war on photographers. A British man is forced to give up his hobby of photographing busses due to harrassment. The credit controller, from Gloucester, says he now suffers "appalling" abuse from the authorities and public who doubt his motives. The bus-spotter, officially known as an omnibologist, said: "Since the 9/11 attacks there has been a crackdown. "The past two years have absolutely been the worst. I have had the most appalling abuse from the public, drivers and police over-exercising their authority. Mr McCaffery, who is married, added: "We just want to enjoy our hobby without harassment. "I can deal with the fact someone might think I'm a terrorist, but when they start saying you're a paedophile it really hurts."

Is everything illegal and damaging now terrorism?
Israeli authorities are investigating why a Palestinian resident of Jerusalem rammed his bulldozer into several cars and buses Wednesday, killing three people before Israeli police shot him dead. Israeli authorities are labeling it a terrorist attack, although they say there is no clear motive and the man -- a construction worker -- acted alone. It is not known if he had links to any terrorist organization.

Boston public school locked down after someone saw a ninja: Turns out the ninja was actually a camp counselor dressed in black karate garb and carrying a plastic sword. Police tell the Asbury Park Press the man was late to a costume-themed day at a nearby middle school.

And finally, not terrorism-related but a fine newspaper headline: "Giraffe helps camels, zebras escape from circus":
Amsterdam police say 15 camels, two zebras and an undetermined number of llamas and potbellied swine briefly escaped from a traveling Dutch circus after a giraffe kicked a hole in their cage. Are llamas really that hard to count?

School locked down after 'ninja' sighted in woods

BARNEGAT, N.J.—It's the case of the nonexistent ninja. Public schools in Barnegat were locked down briefly after someone reported seeing a ninja running through the woods behind an elementary school.

Turns out the ninja was actually a camp counselor dressed in black karate garb and carrying a plastic sword.

Police tell the Asbury Park Press the man was late to a costume-themed day at a nearby middle school.

The lockdown began shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday and lasted until 9:30.

Imagine all the ninjas they didn't see in the woods. That's what they should really be afraid of.

I remember the Ninja Parade. Every year I thought I saw a ninja. One year my parents found candy in my pocket, that must have been put there from a ninja!

Sometimes I wonder how the human race has managed to survive given all of our collective stupidity.

A bit of a side note: Ninjas are awesome.

This is ridiculous. The ninjas are on our side! They're a part of Homeland Security!

I'm betting it's hilarious.

9-11 and dispatch calls can be funny as hell. One late night, early morning while doing a transport I was listening to radio calls. Partly to keep me awake and partly to make sure there weren't any deputies between me and the jail-it was late I was speeding. Might not get a ticket, but might get a call from your boss the next morning. I hear a call from dispatch stating there's a report of six naked men walking down the middle of Hwy 101 at the top of Mt. Neah-Kah-Nie. North Oregon coast, really deserted most nights. The next radio transmission I hear is "Dispatch this is 204, I copy. Request a more detailed description of the subjects in question."

Look out! The terrorists have curry! by Grant Martin Jul 2nd 2008 @ 12:00PM

Something didn't smell right. British Airways passengers started to panic when a foul smell started coming from their aircraft on a flight between Belgrade and London. Fearing a terrorist attack, the captain turned around the aircraft and put it back down in the Serbian capital, where the aircraft was evacuated and contained separately on the runway.

Passengers screamed in horror fleeing from the aircraft as they were helped by workers in hazmat suits.

Investigators first feared that a a container with acidic chemicals had burst in the hold and was causing havoc among the cargo. But upon further investigation, they narrowed the source down to a package of curry.

This follows on the heels of an emergency landing earlier this year of an Alitalia flight because of similar fears --- the source of which was revealed to be minced onions.
maybe the ninjas got hungry...
