I see a whole new genre of drunk-sports.

One gets the impression that's not the first time that she's done that. I wonder if the mall management is liable for her injuries, had she miscalculated and gone over head first.

Neat. You have to find a strong pulley, however; often I find that if you lean back while holding onto the handrail, it stops.

Also: escalator steps are too wide to use a Slinky on.

Keith Olbermann sent one of the MSNBC interns (or maybe junior reporter) and a cameraman to try this. She managed to spin once, but she kept trying to sit up, and consequently kept falling between the rails.

Witnesses said the girl was playing around an escalator when she fell nearly 25 feet to the floor below.

Witnesses said she did not appear to be breathing after the fall. They also said the girl was playing unattended while her mother was having a manicure.

Medics said accidents on escalators can happen, but usually are not serious.

"We see falls on escalators, I don't want to say on a regular basis, but from time to time that generally are people getting off and on the escalators. And they get caught when they come to that stop, but generally not of a serious nature," said John Woutat with West Des Moines EMS.

Mall spokesman Randy Tennison said Thursday that the child may have been sitting on the railing. He said security cameras caught "some of the girl's activities."

West Des Moines Police Lt. Jeff Miller said the investigation into the accident continues.

Hmmmm...one wonders if this kid saw that video and thought that it looked like fun.

I'd try that, but I just know the escalator would grab me and tear my pants off.

Fortunately, if I manage to break the escalator, it won't be out of order, it'll just be temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience. (RIP, Mitch Hedberg!)
