Abstract: "An artwork exploring the question of life gains an unexpected facet when it must be killed"   click to show

"The tiny coat was comprised of a biodegradable polymer matrix in the shape of a doll's jacket covered in a layer of living tissue made up of mouse stem cells. When the cells began growing to quickly, the curators of the show had to cut off the nutrients—effectively killing the cells. The artists couldn't be happier." I am slightly weirded out by this... also fascinated at the progress...

Oryx and Crake, anyone?

I first heard about growing tissue "objects" in re a company that grows body parts such as ears in this same manner. I thought seriously about buying stock in it. It did not occur to me that one could make art objects from living tissue. I dont think the cells or tissue is being wasted is it? It is a renewable resource. I likey in a sort of macabre way.

Aaaaw, a coat. How clever.

This is really pushing the boundaries of art...I'm not sure I like it but it's certainly fascinating. Though the objective is not clear...I am ok with it as long as there is no undue "suffering" involved. I wonder how people come up with these ideas...and what their objectives are when creating something like this.
