Actually, that's not why. It's a funny, clever, and fairly analogous description of the male "waiting for something to happen" state of mind. Very useful for hunters. At that point, we really aren't so much thinking of nothing as not thinking at all. The senses wire into the brain and only changes register. That's why, when we're for instance, zoning out in front of the TV, we're focussed on our eyes, and that's it.
