Spoiler: I was right the first time all the answers end up being a multiple of 9.
I chose 17, so 1+7=8, 17-8=9 Lets go 42, so 4+2=6, 42-6=36 Now try 76, so 7+6=13, 76-13=63 |

I've done it ten times now and I've had all the symbols come up at least once.
