Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama

Anyone listened this album? I would love some feedback. Thinking about asking for it for Christmas.

I have done a lilttle research on it.

Anyone who watches "Lost" might have heard a cut from "I Shall Not Walk Alone" which is a BH original, but I think it was the BBOA who were singing it on the show...

The album is excellent (but then again, I am biased, seeing as I have every Ben Harper CD and DVD and have seen him in concert numerous time).

But really, the album works on a lot of levels

I appreciate your feeback, Cap'n. However your bias does colour your review.

Just for the halibut, in your opinion, list what you think are his best albums in decending order.

LOL, I’m kind of on the same page as Nemo. I have every Ben Harper Album and have seen him 4 or 5 times now.

I will say that it is allot different then anything Ben has ever done. I'm more of a “Fight for your mind”/Ben jamming on the Weissenborn fan. There Will Be A Light is more of a Gospel/Soul album. Very good never the less.

Personally I think his best "album" is the dvd "Live at the Hollywood Bowl". However, the tune "Drugs Don't Work" probably makes Live From Mars edge out the rest. To me, Ben Harper is like Frank Zappa (I know, weird comparison), in that I have not listened to anything of his that I don't like. He is one of those artists that can play the same song at different times and make them sound entirely different, probably just based upon how he is feeling at the time.

There will be a Light is no exception. I am not a fan of gospel music, but he makes this work perfectly.

That's very cool, because I'm into the Gospel/Soul scene a little.

Anyone know Ben's spiritual affiliation? I hear he's more rastafarian influenced than Christian, per se, but he writes lots of songs with Christian overtones -

Power Of The Gospel
I Want To Be Ready
Tonight Is In The Lords Arms
Picture of Jesus ( I know it's about MLK)
my sig is an example of Ben's dabbling into Christian themes...

what's your take?

Everyone has there favorite Ben song. To me its God fearing man (again that ~religious undertone). That song simply moves me like very few other songs (by anyone) do.

http://www.swer.net is a great Ben Harper site. It has a lot of biographical information. I also recommend trying to get a hold of the Pleasure and Pain. I saw it at Bonnaroo one year and it's great.

This is a quote from

http://www.christianitytoday.com/mus...lbealight.html

Harper told The Age, a newspaper in Melbourne, Australia, that he looks for "the church in art. I don't look to define my faith. Either you have it, or don't. If you want to put a name and a face on it, and that empowers you, fine. But for me, God is bigger than any box religion can put it in. But it's a journey which is closing itself day by day."

good album, but I was honestly a little disappointed. I'm glad i bought it and I would recommend it. It's just not something that I want to listen to all the time
