I had absolutely no idea what Goa was. Here's what AllMusic had to say, for others like me:
Quote:
Named after a region on the coast of southwestern India famed as a clubbing and drugging paradise ever since the '60s, Goa Trance broke away from the Teutonic bent of European trance during the early '90s and carried the torch for trance during the rest of the decade. The presence of LSD on the Goa scene -- instead of the ubiquitous club drug Ecstasy -- translated the music into an appropriately psychedelic version of trance that embraced the mystical properties of Indian music and culture. Traditional Indian instruments such as the sitar and sarod (or electronic near-equivalents) often made appearances in the music, pushed along by the driving, hypnotic sequencer music that trance had always been known for. The style is considerably less turntable-oriented than other electronic dance styles, especially since vinyl tends to melt in the heat (DATs are often used instead). As a consequence, Goa had comparatively few DJs to recommend it worldwide until the late '90s. Labels like Dragonfly, Blue Room Released, Flying Rhino, Platipus, and Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto Fluoro became important sources for the sound. Oakenfold, Britain's most popular DJ, finally gave Goa trance the cache it had lacked in the past by caning it on the radio and in clubs across the country. The British sound system known as Return to the Source also brought Goa trance to the mainstream hordes, releasing three volumes in a compilation series of the best trance music on the scene.
In addition to the names listed there, they list the following as 'top artists':
Quote:
* Astral Projection
* Hallucinogen
* Infected Mushroom
* Man with No Name
* Return to the Source
* Juno Reactor
* Koxbox
* Montauk P.
* Planet B.E.N.
* Children in Paradise
* Cydonia
* Etnica
* Green Nuns of the Revolution
* Manmademan
* Noosphere
* Paul Oakenfold
* Prana
* Shiva Chandra
* Technossomy
* Total Eclipse
Obviously, I can't recommend any of them . Doesn't sound like my style of music, but at least now I know something more.

Frontline Assembly, especially Columbian Necktie (GOArge Remix).

And I second with Yellowchef...Oakenfold is not goa.

Try some Front 242 or In Strict Confidence...not sure if it's what your'e looking for.

that article from allmusic is accurate until this statement "As a consequence, Goa had comparatively few DJs to recommend it worldwide..."
after that, it's all incorrect drivel. Goa/Psy STILL doesn't have any DJs respected outside the goa scene (which is pretty kick ass, if you ask me!)
It is true, however, that Oakenfold once played goa... many many many years ago... you can still find one of his mixes on the Dragonfly web site (I think), from like '95.

Anyway...
I'm really into what's technically coined "psy trance" (though most everyone uses the terms interchangibly, myself included), which tends to be less eastern influenced. If Astral Projection is goa trance, then HuxFlux or (old/good) Infected Mushroom is psy trance...
that list of artists on AllMusic is REALLY old. Thats some last century kind of stuff..

I tend to like it harder, faster, chunkier, and with good complexities.. here's some of my favorite artists:

HuxFlux
Digital Talk
Grapes of Wrath
Toxic
Rinkadink
Lemurians

I'll end there...

If you can find them (probably on SoulSeek), I'd suggest getting the Fear Psychosis compilation for the harder stuff, and the Fairy Tales comp for some of the lighter stuff. YUM.
or, if you want I have about 40 gigs of psy.. feel free to msg me and maybe we can work something out =)

Why the f--- is Paul Oakenfold on that list? I don't care if he spun a few goa tracks at one time in his life. I feel bad for anyone that saw his name and went to buy a goa CD of his cause most record stores only carry his trance stuff.

Ready, Steady, Go is about as far from Goa as you can get, lol
