honestly no favorites... I dont' have many jazz recordings, but I love going to the live jazz places in town and listening to it whenever I can. Anyone else have suggestions on good jazz?

more "abrasive" stuff---

the first electric miles period. my favorite is on the corner, but all are swell.

steve lacy--the way, windows, too many others.

thelonius monk---the riverside collection. get it from a library.
ornette coleman--beauty is a rare thing--same deal. these are both huge compilations.

art ensemble of chicago--nice guys, urban bushmen, fanfare for the warriors, stances a sophie---almost everything, actually.

john carter--the whole of the american folk suite--dahweh (spelling?), castles of ghana, ghosts, fields.

eric dolphy--everything--if you have to pick one, start with out to lunch

later coltrane is now vastly underrated--kulu se mama is cool--interstellar space a complete rearrangement of the brain molecules.

mingus, yes--black saint and the sinner lady--excellent stuff.

there is alot of new music that gets stuck under the jazz heading that i could point you at, if you are interested--stuff like the boston sound collective...

stop.

For more swingish jazz , I'd suggest Benny Goodman. His work is great. Django Reinhardt is also worth checking out.

In the more experimental jazz(avant garde if you will), check out Sun ra, Later Coltrane, and John Scofield.

So many more if you'd like.

Its great to see some jazzheads here.

I've noticed in some of the jazz threads, wynton marsalis gets quite a bit of hate. Can someone explain why? I've always thought he was a good musician, and one of the few people in the jazz world that is able to get any mainstream attention.

You absolutely, positively can NOT go wrong with Miles Davis.

After that, then there are the amazing female Jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and, dare I say it, Nora Jones.

I highly recommend the TV documentary series Jazz by Ken Burns. It will be the best $99 you ever spend on a DVD boxed set.

I play guitar in a Jazz band. Used to play alto sax in Jazz Band in high school.

Grant Green(or maybe Greene) is a most excellent jazz guitarist that you may want to check out. There is a song of his called "creature" that I have on a compilation disc that have that I may never forget.
