1280/1024=1.25
1280/960=1.3333333333333333333333333333333
1024/768=1.3333333333333333333333333333333
800/600=1.3333333333333333333333333333333
the 1280/1024 makes everything squished... whereas 1280x960 keeps the same aspect ratio of all the other resolutions...

It depends I guess... x1024 became a sort of standard resolution, even on 4:3 displays so that's what everybody used. Just Because.
I guess it snowballed from there to what we see today.
I think running anything other than a 4:3 resolution on a 4:3 display is retarded.
