I've heard the same things about Motorolla. I currently have the Samsung N625 and have problems getting reception in spotty areas. Even more disturbing, due to the fact that I live up on the hill, I get ZERO reception. It's one of the main reasons I need to upgrade, in addition to needing tri/quad-band service.
Tinfoil: which Samsung model would you rec?
