the main reason I'm leaning towards depending on internships via word of mouth and networking is because the really big ones posted by known colleges like columbia, etc, are undoubtedly going to be swamped by apps. whereas me, i'm being realistic and not putting too much on that knowing that i'm sure as hell not going to be qualified relative to everyone else in my class. you see.. i go to UofRochester, and it's known #1 for optics. therefore, the '06 optics class is no larger than 25 people (and will surely decrease)and I know for sure that i'm merely average. therefore, i'm thinking its best to aim for less publicized internships. don't get me wrong. I have gone extensively through the school career center as well using other resources such as LongIsland based chapters of OSA(optical society of america), etc. but would also add the more obscure internships to my edge above others.
