il - I understand the casualness, but remember you are networking and you need to remember that someone you are talking to may lead you to the right door. Keep dotting your i's and crossing your t's until you land what you want.
Since you are targeting the Long Island Area, (i lived in Hicksville for a bit) you should find all the companies that use or produce the technologies you are schooling on.
While lasers may be the niche you are looking to, maybe you should also broaden that niche a bit because truly what are you looking is learning process and procedures for technology. While lasers would be the ultimate, something within the technology sector would suffice in at least getting you into the business door.
