Minor update - I think I'm going to take the plunge. Currently in a long-distance stage of the relationship (bloody schooling!) so I'm going to start now and be accustomed/semipro with it by the time I see her next.
Not sure how far I want to go. Balls and shaft are getting shaved for sure, but the rest I'm still sitting on the fence between "shave" and "trim". Either way, there's pretty much no risk of her freaking out and withholding sex - after three months, she'll want it worse than I do!
