The finest engines in my opinion come with cylinders in multiples of 6: BMW's in-line 6, Porsche's boxer flat 6...
The very best engines have traditionally always had 12 cylinders; they make v8's sound lumpy and unrefined, tend to have a better top end (rev higher), and are just much better all round.
