My dogs are both chipped, not that I've EVER in more than 25 years of having dogs, lost one. They have another advantage though - the vet (at least, my vet) can scan the chip and call up the dog's complete medical history on his screen. That convenient enough for regular visits, but if I ever had to take him to an emergency vet, the vet could have his complete record at his finger tips
