Closest thing I've ever experienced to a natural disaster was a big ice storm about 7 years ago. It was kinda nasty, downed power lines everywhere, schools and businesses were shut down (seems like I was the only person I knew who still had to go into work). As far as I know, there were a very small number of casualties that could be directly attributed to the ice storm, it was mostly just a big inconvienience.
When it wasn't raining ping-pong ball sized chunks of ice, I loved going outside to look at all the trees, bending underneath the weight of the ice that had coated the branches. The way the light hit them seemed almost magical, couple that with the fact that I was just about the only person crazy enough to go out and brave the elements. It made for moments of serenity that I've never been able to match.
