We were playing in the "Dark Sun" campaign world, which is like a giant desert type setting, and the group I was traveling with ended up beating the hell out of some big bird/dragon type thing in its lair. While they are all cleaning up the riches the DM asks if I'm gonna collect any treasure, and I say no, but I'd like to skin the monster and keep the skin and some of the rib bones of the monster. He looked at me puzzled and asked "why the hell do you want that crap for? What a mess"
I took all the stuff with me to town and had the rib cage and skin made into a dragon scale shield and body armor made from the bones of the beast. Everyone else had such lousy stuff, not to mention the fact that they blew the loot on junk that didn't help them at all. They weren't very imaginative I suppose.
