Network chuggs computer

hmm i am hvaing network problems. I have the modem on my computer (sharing a 56K, woot!) and am linkd directly via a cross-over cable to my brothers computer. REcently, i've noticed that whenever i hvae my network cable plugged in, the computer starts to chugg, or moreso have sudden interupts every 5-10 seconds. Like a complete halt of the system for half a second every 5-10 seconds. Which is soooo fucking annoying.

Anyway, what could be some causes of this? or also, what are some methods to look at the transfer between 2 computers, like the sending and receiving of packets? any good programs to do this (individual packets and there source/destination)? I don't know if i hvae some dodgy thing trying to download something off of his comp or what? but whenever i unplug the network cable, the problem goes away. So it's definiltey network related.

We're both using Win XP professional. No windows jokes please

Thanks for any help
