Also, the Xbox comes with 2 free months of Live when you buy it in a retail box--but it doesn't come with the headset. You can buy the headset separately for $30. I don't recommend getting the knock-off headsets, either. Not as good of quality. If you decide you want to stick with Live, you can get a 1-year sub for I think $50.
The 2 free months deal is on a scratch-off card in the DVD case of the bundled game.
I just bought an Xbox myself. Liking it so far. If you like racing games, Project Gotham Racing 2 has lots of Live integration and should give you a good overview of the service's capabilities.
