hydrairc is awesome-cool
trillian has decent support, I use it, and it works, but scripting is near impossible. Its main advantage is that the interface is compact - it doesnt take up your whole monitor, all the others here do.
mirc is popular, and deservedly so, but also has exploits and a confusing interface
xchat is very cool, on par with mirc, yet less popular
Those are the ones Ive used, there are others, like irssi, but I havent tried 'em.
