OK, I've read the whole thing now, and I will definately say "fiction". Also, I will strongly re-recommend House of Leaves to people who enjoyed this caving story.
I also checked the pages themselves: all of them were "last modified October 4, 2002", significantly after the "5/19/01" date on the first page.
I also looked at the source of the first and last pages, but nothing interesting there.
