Watch the original "The Haunting" - a creepy haunted house movie.... fear is enhanced by what you don't see as apposed to overdone FX.
Also, I recommend a lil' dark horse 70's film called "The Changling" starring George C. Scott. Once again, another creepy house movie. Overacting aside and a few campy "experimental" shots, it's a very effective movie that gets frights from a well paced storyline and opts for audio instead of FX.
Want a smart horror flick? Ya know, the type where you're not yelling at the TV? Rent "Dawn of the Dead." Best. Zombie. Movie. EVER.
