My thoughts on cruelty are based on my thoughts on unhappiness, evil, and sadism. I believe that intelligence is teh root cause of all three. Of all the people I know, the smartest of them are the most miserable, resentful, and sadistic.
On the other hand, look at those who have a disability that affects intelligence. I've worked with special-ed kids before, and I've noticed a trend. Of all the people I've met, the kids with Down's syndrome are the happiest, most care-free and nicest people. I would say that because of their disability, they did not develop mentally as far as the average person, but they also haven't developed the ability to be mean, to be unhappy, to be cruel, that the rest of us have.
Intelligence is a mixed blessing. It gives us the power to do good, and the instinct to do bad.
