Five Starving Supermodels Busted for Bakery Robbery
Thursday October 16, 2003
A BUNCH of ravenous supermodels raided a bakery and wolfed down cakes, pastries and bread -- then passed out on the crust-littered floor.
"They didn't touch the cash register, just the pastries and breads," says Paris police Detective Jean-Luc Rousseau. "There were five of them, all as skinny as bed slats, and they broke into the bakery and started gorging themselves.
"I think they must have been hungry -- very, very hungry."
Says devastated bakery owner Francois Duchard: "It's all gone -- every bit of food is gone.
"They devoured eclairs, petits four, bread, croissants -- even a three-tier wedding cake.
"I wish they had just robbed the cash register. It would have been a lot cheaper."
Duchard says he found the five accused passed out on the floor, frosting covering their mouths, when he arrived to open for business in the morning.
"I stepped inside and saw five beautiful, skinny women on the floor," he recalls. "I heard them moan and saw that their faces were covered with chocolate, frosting and crumbs and there were gobs of cream in their hair. Every display rack in my store was empty -- and I had just refilled them the night before."
Police say the models entered the bakery by slipping through a small window in the back of the building.
"From the path of destruction," says Rousseau, "they stopped first in the kitchen and attacked several large containers of chocolate mousse and a gallon jar of cherries, as well as the wedding cake, some croissants and a tray of strawberry tarts. Then they went to work on the display shelves in the front of the bakery.
"By the time they finished, they were too lethargic to move."
Prosecutors say they will file charges of breaking and entering, robbery and vandalism against the five models identified only as Adele, Blanche, Babette, Honore and Melodie -- all of them top professionals in the Paris runway scene.
They were released to their agents' custody after posting bail.
A spokeswoman for one modeling agency says the five beauties will plead guilty to all charges later this month.
She says they had just finished a five-day swimwear shoot when they were found in the bakery.
"We do keep fashion models on a strict diet," the spokeswoman says.
"The girls went though this place like a plague of locusts," detective Rousseau says.
Strangely, the only treat left untouched in the bakery was . . . carrot cake.
