ya, i went to South Africa in early, 2000.
but i have to go back since i was only able to spend one week in Cape Town before i was due in Kenya.
however, i have to say Cape Town was amazing. just so picturesque, friendly, and relatively safe. (mind you, i didn´t go anywhere near the Cape Flats).
i got to climb Table Mountain, visit Robben Island, drive out to the wine regions, visit Stellenbosch (truly a pretty town!!). i also managed to score a lift down to the Cape of Good Hope... which was incredible.
i would love to go back to see the rest of the country... like Kruger, Drakensburg, Durban, J-Bay ... the list goes on ...
as far as advertising for tourism in South Africa goes, well its pretty light on the ground in Sydney... but its certainly the most visible of all African nations.
however, that being said, Australia is well acquainted with South Africa through out sporting rivalries, so i´m not sure that they need to do too much to promote the presence of their nation.
if i can offer a bit of a plug for South Africa, i´ve got to say its a STUNNING COUNTRY, the rainbow nation... a place that i´ve tasted, but must see again.
and if someone was planning on travelling though Africa, i suggest that South Africa is the best place to start, since its the most modern of all African nations, and therefore a good ´ease-out´ of the graphic culture shock that most westerners get.
