I think this belief is one of the most fundamental differences between two large groups of people. Some see humans as doing nothing but damage to their surroundings while others see themselves as part of their surroundings. Certainly they can do some vicious damage (as evidenced by the cruelty in this story) but, although we are thinking animals which can weigh the consequences of our actions, in the end we are a part of nature for better or worse.
