Airbags wouldn't deploy in such an event. They are designed to open only under frontal impact. Those trucks are good and strong, and the reason that you made out with such comparatively little injury.
Rollovers are very common with 4x4's when driven by either new owners or people that don't drive the vehicle. They sit high and have higher CoG. Lack of familiarity with handling characteristics makes for a greater chance of roll.
You are correct in considering yourself lucky.
