Magnetic interference is one possibility.
FedEx dropped my SGI GDM-90W11 (24" CRT that weighs about 70 pounds) and it rotated clockwise very slowly thereafter. I am guessing your monitor might have suffered similar mishandling.
It is VERY important to handle a monitor very carefully and smoothly. It may be heavy, but it's still relatively fragile.
