The Media is the message
Counter culture has been celebrated by the media as the 'cutting edge of cool' for over 35 years in the US. The media outlets work in a viscious circle jerk with the entertainment and fashion industry. Together they all work to push whatever they'd like down into the minds of the impressionable.
Since the corporate grunge movement, corporate counter culture is what the media has been pushing. To get a tatoo and wear a uniform of cheaply manufactured, mass produced non-conformist clothes does not make you a non-conformist.
The first mark of the non-conformist is the mind. It's the rejection of well accepted social conventions or ideas based upon the inability of those traditions to satisfy specific political, social, environmental, economic, religious, sexual, racial, or gender concerns.
