Hmm.. considering I haven't had a real relationship in 4 years I won't even touch this one. Though I did turn one down 3 years ago with a nice girl, but man was i drunk and really stupid at the time. Plain and simple have fun and talk to them. I agree that pick up lines are pretty shitty. Doing things where you meet girls you don't know is a sure fire way to boost your odds. My buddies did use my advice of drink a little and go out and have fun. It is pretty hard to pick up girls when you're inside programming all day and recompiling your kernel all night, which seems to be the norm at my college.
